Barack Obama Re-Elected President

President Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.

President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan.

NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you."

The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from President Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy.

The race tightened during the final months of the campaign, with gaffes and surges from both candidates. After a weak performance after the Republican Convention, Romney surged following Obama’s listless performance after the first presidential debate. Nevertheless, the president cemented a lead in battleground states heading into Tuesday’s election.

Neither candidate devoted much time to campaigning in Missouri, which has leaned heavily to the right in the past several presidential cycles. Romney campaigned in Kirkwood several months ago, and he was heavily favored to take Missouri's 10 electoral votes—which he did.

The economy was a key issue for many voters in the state as well as jobs and Obama's push for universal health care. The campaign, while not close in Missouri, was seen as close by some voters nationally.

"I'm here to hopefully have a change in the country. The economy. No jobs. Tax increases on things that aren't necessary. Just the whole mood of the economy," Jack Cusamano of Town and Country said. "I just want to see a leader do what they say they're going to do and help the small people succeed."

Will Edgar, 18, was undecided until this morning when he decided jobs might tilt him toward Romney. The issue that tilted him toward Mitt Romney concerns Edgar's choice of future career: underwater welding.

"I'm going to school to be an underwater welder and Mitt's all for starting all sorts of drilling, particularly off the East Coast," he said, adding that Obama has sought to restrict it. So, when did he decide? "When I woke up this morning."

Rick Luebcke of Chesterfield, a lifelong Republican, voted for Obama.

"While I spent my career with a major automobile company and have supported the Republican Party, I just don't think that their opinion of how the country should be run helps the people of the country in which they live," he said.

Cole West, of Arnold, told Patch he was pro-Obama because of the president's stance on health care.

"My 4-year-old has a heart condition, and Obama's plan would eliminate the pre-existing condition clause so my daughter Ava could get health insurance," West said.

this is so unbelievable...two things...one it shows the republicans are way out of step...not to be able to beat a president who has the country in the worst shape since the depression (at least he cant blame bush anymore)...two...it shows who is really racist in this country......blacks...they voted 98% for obama.....if it would have been a white or hispanic or female president...romeny would have won in a landslide

Goerge, it's ok to be upset that he won but please think before you post comments. No promises is a good thing. You can't always deliver on promises. It is going to take a lot to move this country and the world back in the right direction. Not four years or even eight can do it. In this past decade the way the US has operated for so long has changed drastically so it will take a lot for change. Be realistic please. No democrat or republican can do it in that short of time, especially when the parties aren't working together.

george, I too remember the two years of democratic majority that Obama squandered. He was far from a liberal in that tenure. He was a bland centrist. The stimulus generally started during Bush's lame duck period, and was much more conservative than recommended by most economists. He caved and continued the Bush tax cuts.

So yeah, I am somewhat disappointed in those first two years, because of the reality that he played them like a conservative instead of using the power that he had.

Your comments over-exemplify the failings of the GOP. The GOP machine will have to quit devoting so much of their panderings to extremists if they want GOP platforms to be successful going forward.

Al Mount--do you think that Romney would have released additional tax returns for $5 million dollars? What is he hiding? I mean, even his own father released far more than 2 years worth. Personally I think there must have been information in there that was more damaging to be public than the damage he took keeping it private, and that is saying something.

Truth be told people are going to vote for someone they can relate to, do you think the 98% relates to someone they feel is like them or a rich white guy. The latino vote went more for Obama too, the reason because they feel that the "other" guy doesn't like them because of the perception from the party that represents them.

Congratulations to President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and Senator Claire McCaskill, among the many other winners last night! We can never go back to the failed policies of George W. The Dow is up 63% since President Obama was elected in 2003. It's gaining today. Look at the long term. We were told Bill Clinton's tax increase of 1993 would lead to the end of the world as we know it. It led to the longest domestic economic expansion, for the majority of Americans, in 30 years. We were told Bush's tax cuts would grow the economy, but they and the other GOP policies led to the worst financial collapse since 1929.

If the GOP will cooperate with the President, who was reelected by a large electoral college majority and by a popular vote majority, and pass a jobs bill, coupled with a return to the Clinton-era tax rates, closing all the tax loopholes so that Mitt Romney and Donald Trump aren't paying lower tax rates than St. Louis County cops and principals and firefighters, and we trim spending we don't need, the country will be roaring back again. No deficit, as we saw under Clinton, we can pay the debt down, and we'll be on the right track.

It has been the Republican goal to objectify people as "others." You could see it with the handling of Romney. When did we most hear about Romney was a Mormon? It was during the Republican primaries. Even if it was the repeated "Oh, the fact that he is a MORMON doesn't bother me;" it meant constantly making sure that his religion was at the front of every discussion, almost like a backhanded compliment; keeping it out there as a dog whistle because they knew that it struck a chord in the base.

Then when the national election was between Obama and Romney, the mention of his religion was rarely ever heard about again. What you mainly saw from Republicans were these same portrayals of Obama as some sort of "other." Actually, not even a singular "other," but objectifying him as some other religion, some other nationality, some other completely different political philosophy, etc. This is the strongest tool that the Republican party has to fight their political races and to divide the country by compartmentalizing people into these groups with varying and conflicting (and mostly fictitious) agendas.

For anybody who was spewing such vile rhetoric on sites like Patch, at family picnics or at the local pub, no matter the greater good that you perceived and used to justify it in your head, I think that today is a day for looking in the mirror as the whole Republican party ought to be doing right now. Yesterday, this great nation overwhelmingly rejected that way of thinking.

Yes they did, proving my point that they've been taught the same lies you have.

This from a party that segregates everybody. Religious/Non-Religious, Rich/Poor, Gay/Straight, Male/Female, White/Black, see RDBet's senseless posts for the rest. That's what being divisive is. It's what you tools aren't smart enough to see yourselves doing on here everyday. All any of you ever do is hate. Those of us who know better, pity you. One day you may get it, but likely not, it's obvious many of you don't have that capacity.

None of that was ever the goal of the Republicans. If you evaluate where you got that opinion, then you might finally figure-out who is actually screwing you. Until then, you're just embarrassing yourself.

How many of you, while trashing Romney over his tax-return, said, "Wow, I wish I paid that percentage"? None. You all said "he needs to pay more", because you are trained that way. Deny it all you want, but it's just 1 of 1000 examples.

You've all spent months on here ragging erroneously on Republicans while clinging to the inability to understand what you're even talking about. Months of effort to intentionally misrepresent "others", telling people what "they" want, when you don't have the first clue.

You don't even know your own party's goals, much less the ability to explain how their methods work, or when they have ever worked anywhere in the world. All any of you are bright enough to do is repeat the hate you've been fed.
See, watch this.....

Yet, as an entrepenurial type - at some point I will have to charge counseling fees. So take a breath and try to get it together (Baby steps baby steps). These mindless generalizations and attacks do you no good.

GOP catered too much to extremists, and that lost this election cycle for them. Their divide and conquer tactics failed, and the changing demographics of this nation will make it harder for them going forward. You lay it all on me, Devon, but it is GOP strategists that today are fully aware that this country is getting less-white, less religious, cares less and less about sexuality.

Personally, I am not a big Obama fan in his first term, nor McCaskill, or Nixon. But with the GOP catering to the zanies, moderates such as myself have little choice but vote for Dems.

If the GOP reforms itself to some sense of normalcy, then come back and chat. Of course, if the GOP reforms itself, that may leave you outside their tent.

Though it's not entirely a free market in the US with our penchant for doling out corporate welfare and protecting monopolie, the stock market is not controlled by president. Nor are gas prices controlled by the president. It is amusing yet annoying that people that worship free markets are often clueless on how they work.

But you have to look not all white people voted with Romney yes, but like I said people vote with whom they relate to, but another layer is they vote with people whom they think has their back as well. Obviously there are different factors that will influence a persons vote, not everything is black and white. (No pun intended). I believe it could be that a majority of the United States either allowed the President to continue a "path of destruction" or a new "path to a more stable" America either way you look at it, because they feel he does have their self interests in mind. Obviously in the real world race is one of those factors that matter, I am sure there are people who voted strictly for Romney because he wasn't black. Does it make it right no. Do we live in a perfect world, obviously we don't

Oh, while I don't share your political views. I think blaming the media for the perception of his being out of touch with the voters who voted Obama. Is more of a societal perception that there are some rich people don't care about people no matter how much they give to charities, you can blame that on many factors one being medial; sure, but you have upbringing, movies that villify rich people or the simple fact of environment. They see that rich people have been getting more money (proof is more millionaires now than most of history, outrageous executive pay even for failure, etc ) and the middle class and poor seem to be gettting poorer.
That to me is why the youth (most of the youths voted for Obama, stictly because they don't identify with the Republican party (whom hasn't really reached out to the youth vote, I might add) didn't really relate to Romeny.
You can rationalize that by the way the youth today want to be rappers or performers because they see their heros and idols making all this money and they think that is the only way to achieve their American dream.
There was just the same amount of negative ads on both sides, so one side blaming the others doesn't answer the real reason one why people voted the way they voted. It surely isn't because everyone wants a handout or they are racist, or the media skewing the results. Easy to point to those as a factors, but reality of it is Obama was a very popular guy in his demographic.
