Hope High School students had the day off of school on Friday, but many headed to school to help out with the seventh annual Empty Bowls service learning project. 

Empty Bowls is an international project to help raise awareness and fight hunger. All donations collected at the fundraiser benefit the Cornerstone United Methodist Church Food Pantry in O'Fallon. Hope High Principal Kim Bertram said Friday's event raised $1,100. 

For an $8 donation, guests received a meal and a handmade ceramic bowl to serve as a reminder that there are hungry children and families all over the world with "empty bowls." 

Hope High School student volunteers made the soup and chili, served guests, entertained with songs and stories and helped organize the event.
