Vote Now: Pick the Top GAC Football Player for the 2012 Season
Vote for the fan's choice for best GAC football player.
The 2012 football season is in the books for most the Gateway Athletic Conference teams.
Yes, it's time for another edition of the St. Charles County Athlete of the Week fan poll. Except this week has a twist. Instead of looking at the last week, we're looking at the entire season.
Tell us in the poll below: Who was the top GAC football player in 2012?
Shane Barrett—Fort Zumwalt East: The Lions sophomore quarterback had a solid first season leading the East offense. As a passer, Barrett was 80-for-169 for 1,441 yards and 17 touchdowns against 10 interceptions. Running the ball, Barrett was tied for the GAC Central in touchdowns with 13. He actually led the conference with 82 points scored thanks to two successful two-point conversions. Barrett carried the ball 222 times for 1,142 yards (5.1 yards per carry)—good enough for second in the Central.
Donte Harrell—Francis Howell: Donte Harrell was a beast for Francis Howell this season. Harrell led the GAC South, and all the GAC in two big offensive categories: touchdowns and rushing yards. Harrell found the endzone 25 times for the Vikings—more than any other player in the GAC. He also ran the ball 226 times for 1,493 yards (most in the GAC). He averaged 6.6 yards per carry this season. Harrell also caught 15 passes for 221 yards. Harrell can add to his totals this week at the Edward Jones Dome in the Class 6 Championship.
Armand Keely—Orchard Farm: The top running back in the GAC North was the Eagles Armand Keely. Keely run a conference-best 183 times. With all those carries, Keely ran for a North-best 1,306 yards—an incredible 7.1 yards per rush. Keely also found the endzone 17 times—tied for tops in the conference.
Tray Mitchell—Holt: Holt running, and 3-time Patch Athlete of the Week champion, Tray Mitchell had a big season for the Indians. Mitchell was the Indians' workhorse. He carried the ball 156 times for 1,157 yards—good for the tops in the GAC Central. His 7.4 yards per carry was tops among all GAC runners with at least 100 carries. Mitchell scored 12 touchdowns on the season to place second in the Central.
