FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS – PREP FOOTBALL GAME PREVIEW
Timberland Wolves (2-4) vs. Fort Zumwalt West Jaguars (4-2)
Friday, Oct. 7, 2011 at 7 p.m. at Hoekel Stadium
Two teams coming off big wins last week, will meet in an important GAC South football matchup at Fort Zumwalt West’s Hoekel Stadium Friday night, when the Timberland Wolves trek east down I-70 for showdown with the first place West Jaguars.
Timberland, which desperately needed to get back on the winning track after losing four straight, did just that was a fantastic 38-26 win over Fort Zumwalt North last week.
Junior running back Lucas Jordan had a breakout game for the Wolves, rushing for 176 yards and two touchdowns – the most yards he’s had in a game since going for 241 in the season opener against Francis Howell North.
For the season, Jordan is second in the GAC South in rushing, with 758 yards, and fourth in scoring, with eight touchdowns.
Quarterback Ryan Bainbridge also had a big night at Zumwalt North last Friday, passing for 207 yards and two touchdowns, most of which went to wideout Ben Steinkamp, who caught three passes for 135 yards and one of those touchdowns.
Zumwalt West claimed its third straight win with a 49-7 beatdown on Homecoming Friday at Francis Howell Central last week.
The Jaguars, who remain the No. 6-ranked team in the statewide Class 6 football poll, looked every bit like one of the best teams in the state by jumping on Howell Central right from the outset, and not letting up until the game was firmly in hand late in the third quarter.
Senior quarterback Drew Hare, a 6-foot-2, 190-pounder, who’s headed to Northern Illinois next year, had another brilliant game for the Jags, completing 18-of-20 passes for 293 yards and four touchdowns.
Fellow senior Ray Harris caught two of those touchdown passes, and rushed for two others, to bring his league-leading total to 15 on the season, while stud wide receiver Kyle Echols caught his sixth and seventh touchdown passes of the season as well.
Defensively, the Jags are led by the trio of defensive end Tanner Day, linebacker Demetrius Bernard, and defensive back Brett Uhlemeyer.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Hoekel Stadium, and fans can tune in to Patch Friday night and early Saturday morning for full coverage of the GAC South showdown between Timberland and Zumwalt West.
