Community Living Inc. Theater Productions Enrich Lives of Adults With Disabilities

Annie Jr. marked the eighth-annual performance for CLI clients with disabilities.

As the curtains opened on Saturday afternoon, actors stepped into the spotlight and limitations were forgotten.

The diverse cast of 33 individuals with disabilities took the stage at Saturday St. Charles West High School for Community Living Inc.’s (CLI) production of Annie Jr.

“The cool thing is, everyone gets a part,” said Jodi Darrohn, CLI’s Director of Adult Recreation Services.

Darrohn said she always makes sure to purchase a large cast script so no one is turned away.

The mission of CLI is to enrich the lives of people with disabilities in St. Charles County, through programs and services including employment, residential and adult recreational services.

Darrohn said the theater productions allow CLI’s clients an opportunity like they’ve never had before.

“A lot of times in high school and church, they were passed over for parts,” she said. “This production allows them to focus on what they can do rather than their disabilities.”

A few of the actors in the weekend production made their acting debut, while others have returned for several years.

“So many actors come in the first year and want to stand in the back,” Darrohn said, “But I think they begin to realize this is their chance to shine. Their parents are just in tears of amazement.”

CLI’s Recreation Services department and volunteers work with the client actors to build sets, props and design costumes.

They also read through the script in advance and adjust lines to make the material easier for clients to memorize.

Rehearsals for Annie Jr. began in January and actors practiced together once a week.

During rehearsals, staff members and volunteers were available to run lines with actors to help them memorize their parts.

Darrohn said focusing on the actors' strengths as opposed to limitations is what makes all the difference in the performances.

“That’s the ultimate way for them and us to enrich their lives and give them confidence,” she said.

Community Living Inc. serves individuals age 18 or older living in St. Charles County.

Darrohn said the recreation services department hosts 50-60 activities each month, including trips to Six Flags and the casino, karaoke and dinner nights.

“We do anything that anyone would want to do with their friends,” she added.
