Firefighters Shovel Driveways as Part of Community Outreach Program

This was the first time the firefighters have offered the snow-shoveling service, and they hope it will grow.

On Friday, Jim Schram was just one of several residents that got some help from Wentzville Fire District firefighters who donate their time off to serve their community.

After four to six inches of snow and sleet fell on the community Thursday, firefighters took the streets Friday equipped with snow shovels and snow blowers as part of the Wentzville Fire District's Community Outreach program.

Schram's sister had seen a post about the firefighters' snow-shoveling service posted on the Community Outreach Facebook Page and tagged him, suggesting that he email the firefighters and ask for help.

The firefighters made the offer of help several times via Facebook on Wednesday and Thursday, asking anyone who needed help to contact them by email. Those asking for help received a confirmation call with a time range to expect the firefighters on Friday.

The volunteers split up to cover the six towns served by the Wentzville Fire Protection District: Wentzville, Foristel, Flint Hill and parts of Lake Saint Louis, O'Fallon, Dardenne Prairie and unincorporated St. Charles County. Ten homes welcomed the firefighters' help.

"Many hands made light work and everyone was done by noon," the firefighters' Facebook page reported.

"I never knew that was something they did," Schram told Patch. Asked if the firefighters had done a good job, he replied, "Yes, yes, yes!"

Schram also left the firefighters a note on Facebook: "You guys were awesome, it was really nice meeting all of you, thanks again!"
