New O'Fallon Senior Club Keeps Older Adults Laughing and Learning

The O'Fallon Active Older Adult's Club club offers active seniors an opportunity to socialize on a monthly basis. Speakers on a variety of topics will inform or entertain.

The O’Fallon Active Older Adults (OAOA) club hopes to get seniors laughing in June.

The next meeting is June 15, with registration closing Wednesday. Lunch will be provided by Garden Villas of O’Fallon. The guest speaker and demonstrator is Jodi Hart.

Hart is a certified laughter yoga leader. Hart’s website states laughter yoga is great for relieving the stress of everyday life. On her site, she said Hasya Yoga (laughter yoga) makes you feel good and is an easy way to exercise.

Those attending the laughter yoga session can watch or participate in the demonstration. Mats will be provided.

The club is a fledgling. Its activities began in March. The club meets from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the third Wednesday each month at the Renaud Spirit Center.

Paula Creech, an adult program recreation specialist for the O’Fallon Parks and Recreation Department, said OAOA provides an opportunity for seniors to be active. Meetings will include a catered lunch with a speaker or entertainment targeting the needs of active, older adults.

The group is informal and gives active, older adults a chance to socialize and learn something in the process. Meeting details are taken care of by the parks board and members attend meetings. Attendance has been growing over the past months, and Creech anticipates more attendees as word spreads, she said.

The cost for OAOA meetings is $8 for O’Fallon residents and $10 for nonresidents. Registration for the OAOA program can be completed in one of three ways:

  • Register online through the Parks and Rec website.
  • Call 636-474-2732 or 636-379-5606
  • Register in person at the Parks and Recreation Administration Office, 400 Civic Park Drive, or the Renaud Spirit Center, 2650 Tri Sports Circle.

July’s OAOA event brings Dennis Cooper and Ted Rood, consultants for MetLife Home Loans. They will discuss reverse mortgages, structuring debt and fixed-income issues. The Rendezvous Café and Wine Bar will cater the event, and lunch will include tuna salad and cookies. Registration for July’s meeting closes July 13.

On August 17, David Harrington from Bankers Life and Casualty and Lana Jacobsmeyer from Visiting Angels will speak. Rendezvous will provide a lunch including roasted veggie pasta bake, salad and pudding.

In September, Wallace Neal will speak on the ins and outs of Medicare. Rendezvous will again provide lunch, including chicken pot pie and cobbler.
