Another Stop on the Search for A Better Pizza

O'Fallon Patch food columnist checks out Chicago style pizza in this weeks culinary challenge.

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! I hope that you all find a wonderful, delicious restaurant to take that special someone to and tell them how much they mean to you! This week I journeyed out to continue our pizza quest at a small l pizza place that was suggested to me by a reader--A Better Pizza, located at 8622 Mexico Rd. here in O’Fallon.

I set out having no idea what to expect for A Better Pizza. I arrived to a store within a strip mall across from the QT on Mexico road. I saw bright hand painted words on the windows displaying the specials currently available. I was eager to go inside and take a look.

I walked in to see several tables and a soda fountain in a small dining room. I was greeted by who I believed to be the manager,  and took a look at the menu. To my readers suggestion, I ordered the deep dish Chicago style pizza with sausage, and was told it would be about 35-40 minutes. Instead of waiting,I left to run a few more errands.

I returned 40 minutes later, and was quickly introduced to what I was told would become my favorite pizza. The manager walked up with my to-go box, and before opening it asked me if I had ever had their pizza before. I replied with a “no’ and wondered immediately if I was going to gain special instructions on how to eat this monster of a pie.

“See how heavy this thing is,” the manager said instead, and handing  it to me. I was amazed to see that the weight of this pizza was comparable to a small dog. I never got an actual weight, but I would be curious to see what it was.

The manager took  the pizza and opened it up. In the traditional Chicago way, the sauce had been placed on top to allow for correct baking and man, was it worth it. I said everything looked good, and the manager closed the box. He then told me that even though I only had a 14” pizza, he didn’t think I could eat more than two or three pieces in a sitting. I returned home, opened the box as quickly as I could and dug in.

I must admit that the manager was right. The size of this pizza was enormous, and I could not eat more those three pieces right off the bat. I started out hungry too, but I was stuffed! The pizza itself was very good, and the crust was crisp and delicious.

Like the from , this is probably not a pizza you would want to pick up and eat, but instead implore the use of a knife and fork (you will not be able to cut this pizza with just a fork alone). Overall, a great experience and another contender checked off the list for this month’s pizza challenge.

For now, I would leave JJ Twig’s in the number one spot with A Better Pizza as a close second. Give them both a try, and tell me what you think! As for me, I’m going to continue trying to finish that behemoth before setting out for my next contender this week. Please keep the suggestions coming!
