Search for Best O'Fallon Steak Begins

O'Fallon Patch food columnist heads to Longhorn Steakhouse for the New York Strip.

Welcome to the first review of our next food challenge. For those of you who did not catch our , we have moved on to the challenge of all challenges--we are seeking the best steak in town! Rib-eye, New York Strip, Filet Mignon or T-Bone--I’m heading out for the best of ‘em.

So I hit the road and landed at Longhorn Steakhouse at 2102 Highway K in O’Fallon. I headed to dinner around 8 p.m. all by my lonesome and walked right in past the hostess station and sat myself down at the bar. It took a few minutes for the bartender  to greet me, which was a bit frustrating, because for that late at night, I was hungry and ready to dig in.

I quickly ordered a drink and scanned the menu.  There were several cuts of meat to choose from, including an 18 oz Ribeye and a 22 oz porterhouse, but I decided on an 11 oz New York Strip Steak, baked potato and a salad.

For being so late at night, the restaurant still had a fair amount of patrons; however, I was the only one sitting at the bar. Two big screen TVs above the bar kept me company until my salad arrived. The salad consisted of fresh lettuce, diced cucumber, tomato, a bit of red onion, cheese and croutons, all covered in ranch dressing. I dove in and devoured a majority of the salad before my steak arrived.

I was excited to see the large steak set in front of me, along with my baked potato, but award no points for presentation. What I just said was literally what I got handed on a white plate. There was no garnish, greenery or whatnot to spruce up the look, what you ordered is what you got. I cut right into my steak and was surprised to find it had been seasoned with a very strong amount of pepper, it was a bit off-putting, but with a bottle of A1 sauce, I cleared that right up.

I finished my meal in complete silence, taking joy in the fact that for the next three weeks, I will get to eat steak as a part of my job. I began to ponder what might come next. Overall, Longhorn was a good late night dinner, and while I wouldn't necessarily recommend it as the best, as far as steak goes, it’s hard to go wrong. As always, let me know if you have any suggestions for where I should head next!
