Walmart Seeking Approval for Outside Storage Containers During Holidays

The city allows for up to two such containers, but Walmart generally has 30-50 during the holiday season.

The O'Fallon Planning and Zoning Commission will be thinking ahead to the holiday season Thursday night.

Walmart is requesting the removal of a condition on their site plan that prohibits the superstore from placing metal storage/shipping containers on their property.

A city documents states that "over the last two years, Walmart has placed between 30-50 cargo/shipping containers at the rear of the store and within the paved area to allow for storage during the holiday season."

The containers are usually left in place from October to February, city staff noted, and staff have been in discussions with Walmart about ways to resolve the issue.

In order to remove the condition, Walmart will have to go before the Board of Adjustment.

City code states that such storage units are permitted, but limits them to two per tenant.
