Assumption School Closed Today After Threat Made on Social Media

An extra police presence is at the school today after last night's threat.

Assumption School in O'Fallon is closed today after a threat was made against the school via social media.

Fox2 News reported this morning that a bomb threat was made over Instagram late Thursday involving three area schools, Assumption in O'Fallon and Immaculate Conception in Dardenne Prairie and Fort Zumwalt West Middle School. Assumption and Immaclate Conception have closed for the day.

Fort Zumwalt West Middle School, however, is open today, but extra police are at the school and extra precautions are being taken after police investigated the threat overnight and determined that it was not credible.

The middle school has electronic locks and visitors must be identified by a video camera before they are allowed access, a staffer told Patch.

O'Fallon Patch will bring you more information as it becomes available.

The threat is against WEST middle school, not NORTH middle school, as stated.

Kay, it's been corrected. Thanks for pointing it out.

Might be a little harsh of me but whoever is responsible should be held "accountable", even if they are middle school students.

I think they absolutely will be held accountable. I am sure it is a middle school student who has no idea how much trouble they are about to get into. My only fear is that they will realize it and do something to themselves out of fear of the trouble they are about it get into. Kids do stupid things...

Michelle, Your statement, "Kids do stupid things...", really upsets me as a mother. This is not some kind of harmless prank. It DISGUSTS me to hear that anyone would assume that a child could not be capable of killing. Do you live in this world?!? I feel absolutely no amount of sympathy for the person responsible. If this level of mental instability exists in any child they need to be removed from school. I will be personally outraged if they are permitted to return to school without extensive psychological treatment. Is your child at West Middle School today? MINE IS!

Lisa, I honestly don't think these kids were actually going to do it...it most likely was a joke--a bad one I'll admit. I also think that Michelle's statement was referring to a kid committing suicide or harming themselves because they were scared of the punishment or realized what they did was wrong. Maybe everyone just needs to take a chill pill in this world and start spreading love and empathy instead of lashing out at eachother and we'd have less bomb threats, murders, and wars.

Lisa - your outrage is alittle confusing...you do have the option to remove your child from the schoo.l

My daughter goes to that school. I was relieved to learn that bombs can't hurt extra police or go through electronic doors.

Lisa - My children go to ICD, so yes, close to home. I know a little bit more about it in that it was a student's social media that was hacked and these messages were put on. I know that it was reported by a parent of a student at ICD. These messages continued into this morning when a screen shot of old WWII artillery were posted. Clearly not by someone who has a clue as to what they were doing. I do not think it was a credible threat and my kids could have gone to school today. The initial reports were vague and alarming.
