O'Fallon Parks Department Invites Residents to Discuss Skate Park Designs

Hardcore Shotcrete Skateparks, Inc. will present designs for the park on Thursday evening.

O’Fallon Parks and Recreation is hosting a public meeting on Thursday to present preliminary design plans for the skate park to be built at Westhoff Park.

Hardcore Shotcrete Skateparks, Inc. will present conceptual designs for the park, based off of feedback from local skaters and residents from a January meeting.

Residents are once again invited to view the skate park designs and share their thoughts at Thursday's meeting at 6 p.m. in the multi-purpose room at the O'Fallon Municpal Centre.

The city plans  for the new skate park to be built off T.R. Hughes Boulevard, where a new entrance to Westhoff Park is under construction. The park will be made of concrete and measure around 8,000 square feet in size with street and bowl skateboarding features.

When O'Fallon upgraded their Parks and Recreation Master Plan in 2009 and asked residents to share thoughts for improvements, residents responded with requests for a skate park.

Managing Director of Parks and Recreation Cindy Springer said construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in 2012.

The project is included in the city's five-year Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) as a project for 2012 at an estimated cost of $300,000. Springer said the project  is also partly funded by the half cent sales tax passed in 2008 for parks and storm water.

Springer said resident input at January's meeting was helpful in narrowing down the skate park designs.

"These guys know what they want and what they'd like to see," she said. "They're the ones who are going to be using it, so let's hear what they want. If we're going to take the time and invest in the park, we want to make sure it's something they want to use."
