O’Fallon’s free Electronics, Computer and Recycling drop-off breaks record

The City of O’Fallon’s first electronics recycling event, which was held Saturday, October 12, collected a record-breaking amount of recyclable materials – 130,301 pounds. The bulk of the waste came from televisions weighing a total of 83,783 pounds. For RNA Worldwide and Didion Orf Recycling, which sponsored the event, it was the largest one-day collection in the companies’ history.

“The event was huge,” said Jim Wenzara, O’Fallon’s Environmental Services Superintendent. The drop-off was held in the west parking lot at T.R. Hughes Ballpark, and people from all over the community were invited to bring unwanted electronics, scrap metal, batteries, appliances, metal office furniture, medical, dental and lab equipment and clothing. “RNA Worldwide did a fabulous job. They completely filled nine 32-foot moving trucks with material. It was also their single-day event record. It’s another ‘best’ for O’Fallon residents and this City.”

The free event was so successful, the City is planning to hold a second event.

“Offering our residents a way to keep electronics, appliances and scrap metal out of the landfill was a great benefit to the entire community,” said Wenzara. “We also can be proud of residents for recognizing the importance of recycling e-waste and metals.”
