Time Capsule found in Civic Park to be opened at O’Fallon’s Fall Fest

This year’s Fall Fest will feature a special look into O’Fallon’s history when a time capsule found buried in Civic Park will be opened for the first time.

The metal container – a 24-inch tall, 10-gallon milk can of the kind once used by dairy farmers – was buried in November of 1970 by Paul Barsi’s social studies class from St. Dominic High School. The capsule was unearthed Thursday, September 26, by O’Fallon’s Parks and Recreation Department staff.

The Time Capsule Ceremony will start at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 12, in Civic Park. The event will be held where the capsule was found, just west of the pavilion near the former Civic Hall site.

“We invite everyone to attend this ceremony, and we’re issuing a special invitation to anyone connected to the time capsule and their families,” said Cindy Springer, Director of O’Fallon’s Parks and Recreation Department. “This is a chance to get a glimpse into what the youth of O’Fallon thought to preserve for the future more than 40 years ago.”
