It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas

Real Mom of O'Fallon shares her secret to keeping the kids in line while waiting for Christmas

The tree is up, the stockings are hung, twinkle lights adorn the house and Buddy the Elf is hanging from the ceiling fan. Yep, it looks like Christmas at the Feldt house. So, I realize that not every house has an elf hanging from the ceiling fan as a part of their normal holiday décor. But don’t worry, Buddy is perfectly safe (the fan isn’t on) and will be somewhere else in the morning. Where will he be?  Well, honestly I don’t know!

Buddy the Elf joins our family each year around Thanksgiving.  He is one of Santa’s special elves from the North Pole. He is on a special assignment to watch the boys in the Feldt house every day.  Buddy remains perfectly still all day long, acting as a silent observer of the normal musings of our daily life.  At the end of each day, once all of us are asleep, Buddy uses his magic to travel to the North Pole, where he gives Santa Claus a detailed report of how Joey and Andrew behaved that day. If they are naughty, Santa will find out. If they are nice, Santa will find that out, too.

When we wake up, Buddy is back from his lengthy journey and in a new observation spot. We still don’t know how Buddy makes it all the way to the North Pole and back to O’Fallon every night. Buddy has special magic from Santa that allows him to do all of these magnificent things. We have to be very careful to never touch Buddy, however, because he will lose his magic if we touch him.  Buddy can be a bit mischievous, though. He likes to hang from ceiling fans, hide in the Christmas tree and once he even went on a road trip with us.

Having Buddy join us each December has become a fun Christmas tradition.  Buddy helps to remind the boys that Christmas isn’t just about getting presents but it is also a time to be caring, nice to each other and to be on their best behavior. We all know that Santa has a list, he checks it twice, and he will find out if we’ve been naughty or nice.

I feel like Buddy’s magic stretches beyond his ability to travel and remain perfectly still all day long.  He has the power to transform 2 rowdy, rambunctious and overly excited boys into calm, well-behaved boys that can patiently wait for Santa’s arrival on Dec. 25.

If you are finding yourself in need of one of Santa’s special elves, you are in luck! The Elf on the Shelf can be found at many local businesses.  , and all work closely with Santa to provide special elves to the many children in O’Fallon. If you decide to adopt one of Santa’s special elves, you will get to name him (or her) and each elf comes with a book to read to your children about the Elf on the Shelf.

It wouldn’t be Christmas without Buddy the Elf and we miss him like crazy when he goes home to the North Pole with Santa on Christmas Eve. Maybe this year Buddy will leave some of his magic behind and the boys will behave this well all year long!
