Schaumburg Booms by Rascals

Rascals fall below the .500 mark.

Schaumburg pitcher Mike Giovenco struckout 10 batters leading the Boomers to an 8-2 win last night over the River City Rascals at T.R. Hughes Ballpark.

Giovenco earned his 1st win of the season allowing 3 hits in 6 innings of work, giving up 2 runs (1 earned) with 3 walks.

Chad Mozingo got the Boomers (11-8) on the board with a sacrifice fly in the first inning.  Frank Pfister and Mozingo would score on a 3rd inning basehit by Brian McConkey.

Trailing 3-0 in the home half of the third, Curran Redal grounded out to the shortstop to score Andy Scott for the 1st Rascal’s (8-9) run of the night.

However, the Boomers did not let up.  In the top of the 4th inning, Gerard Hall, 3 for 4 on the night, hit the first pitch he saw for a double, driving in Michael Valadez.  Hall would come around to score on a single by Pfisters. 

In the home half of the 4th, Rascal’s catcher Scott Darylmple, 2 for 4,  hit his first homerun of the season, and after 4 innings, the Rascals trailed 5-2. 

The Boomers added single tallies in the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings for the 8-2 final.    

Mozingo, McConkey, and Valadez each had 2 RBI’s for Schaumburg.

Casey Barnes was the losing pitcher for the Rascals, his first loss to go with 2 wins.  Barnes pitched 5 innings, giving up 7 earned runs on 9 hits with 1 strikeout and 2 walks.

The Boomers won 2 of the 3 games played in the series.  The Rascals move on to begin a 4 game set against the Gateway Grizzlies.  The series will feature a unique double header Saturday.  The first game will be played at GCS Ballpark in Sauget at 12 noon.  Then, the teams will pack up and go back to O’Fallon for the nightcap at 7.  The remaining 2 games are at T.R. Hughes.  Saturday night will be Wounded Warrior Night presented by Ameren Missouri.

Tonight’s pitching matchup has Craig Goodman (0-0, 3.00), making his 2nd start of the season for the Rascals against Gateway’s Gregg Downing (1-1, 3.17).  First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
