Houseguest Returned to Burglarize O'Fallon Home, Police Say

A man who spent the night at an O’Fallon home returned after being asked to leave and burglarized the house, police said.

Elijah A. Pearson, 19, of the 900 block of St. Bernard Drive in O’Fallon, was charged Monday with second-degree burglary and felony theft.

O’Fallon Police said two residents told police Pearson left their home in the first block of Downing Street after being asked to do so the morning of May 22.

Police said Pearson returned later in the morning after the residents left and stole cash, an Xbox game system, video games, jewelry, phone charges, a laptop computer, prescription pills and a large, green bag.

Police canvassed the neighborhood and found that someone matching Pearson’s description asked for directions to McDonald’s. Surveillance footage at McDonald’s showed Pearson entering the restaurant with a large, green bag. A McDonald’s manager identified Pearson in a photo lineup as the man who came into the store with the bag.

Some stolen merchandise was recovered at Pearson’s home. Police said that Pearson admitted stealing some items, but said he did not return to the home. He said that he slept at the house and was left alone when the residents left.

Pearson is being held in St. Charles County jail. Bail was set at $10,000, cash only.
