Man Sentenced to 5 Years for Meth-Fueled, High-Speed Chase

A man who said he took methampetamine during a high-speed chase with O’Fallon Police was sentenced to five years in prison Friday.

St. Charles County Circuit Court Judge Ted House sentenced Jacob Allen Stafford, 20, to five years in prison for possession of a controlled substance, four years for resisting arrest by fleeing and creating a risk of injury or death, six months for DWI-drug intoxication, and six months for fraudulent use of a credit card.

Stafford, of the 3000 block of Calvert Avenue in Breckenridge Hills, pleaded guilty to the charges Friday. The sentences will run concurrently.

On Oct. 27, an O’Fallon police officer tried to pull over Stafford on Veterans Memorial Parkway at Downing Street in O'Fallon because he believed Stafford was driving impaired.

But Stafford fled, driving up to 50 mph over the speed limit, running red lights and nearly striking other cars, causing other drivers to swerve off the road to avoid accidents.

He went north on Highway 79 into Lincoln County. He went into the intersection of highways 79 and 47 at high speed, causing one vehicle to go off the roadway and into a ditch.

He turned west onto Highway 47 near Winfield, and attempted to pass a car on a hillcrest on 47, narrowly avoiding a head-on collision with another vehicle.

After he was caught, Stafford told police he was on methamphetamine during the pursuit and even took meth while he was fleeing, according to a police report.
