O'Fallon Man Takes Neighbor's Car, Objects to Theft Charge

The man told deputies he committed no crime because he returned the car, despite being told he couldn't take it.

A man stole his neighbor’s car Oct. 29 and drove it to Illinois after the neighbor told him he couldn’t borrow it, police said.

A St. Charles County deputy reported that Timothy J. Conway, 24, of Barberry Lane near O’Fallon, asked to borrow his neighbor’s 2000 Pontiac Grand Am.

The neighbor told police she refused because she’d known Conway only for two weeks and because he was drunk. She also told him the plates were expired and the tires were bad.

At about midnight, the woman noticed the car was gone.

Conway told police he took the vehicle, but didn’t feel he committed a crime because he returned it, according to a St. Charles County Sheriff's Department report.

The deputy reported, “Conway was still consuming alcohol and was intoxicated. He was adamant he was innocent base on his claim that he returned the car and became belligerent with me when I explained to him it did not matter.”

Conway was charged Oct. 30 with first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle and driving while intoxicated.

Bail was set at $15,000 and Conway is prohibited from contacting the victim.
