An O’Fallon man faces criminal charges after police said he violently shook a baby, chased the baby’s father with knives and assaulted three police officers as he was being booked on Sunday.
said Marcus Withers, 20, of the 600 block of Southernside Lane in , was arguing with another man when he grabbed a car seat holding the man’s 6-month-old son and shook it violently.
The man told Withers not to touch his son. Withers went inside his home, retrieved two knives and went back outside and chased the man around the apartment complex, according to a police report.
Police said Withers made stabbing motions with the knife as he chased the victim and made motions as if he were going to throw the knives. Police said when he became aware police were on the way, he dropped the knives and fled.
Police arrested him a short distance from the apartments.
During the booking process, police said Withers was uncooperative, didn’t follow directions and put his face inches away from an officer’s face. The officer pushed him and Withers balled up his fist and tried to strike the officer, according to the report. Another officer grabbed him and sat him in a restraint chair. Police said that as they secured Withers in the chair, he struck an officer in the shoulder with his head and bit another officer, drawing blood.
"You can't hold me forever," the man told O'Fallon Police, according to a police statement.
Bond for Withers was set at $20,000, cash only. He is being held at St. Charles County Jail.
