SCC Offers Free Income Tax Preparation Assistance

Residents can take the stress out of taxes by signing up for free tax preparation assistance at St. Charles Community College Feb. 20-April 2.

The service will be offered from 6:30-9 p.m. every Monday beginning Feb. 20 through April 2 in Room 106 of the College Center. SCC is partnering with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to provide this free service.

VITA offers free tax preparation to individuals with low- to moderate-income levels, which includes single taxpayers earning less than $40,000 and married taxpayers earning less than $55,000. VITA volunteers will complete forms 1040EZ, 1040A or 1040, as well as the Missouri state income tax return and e-file, all at no charge.

The VITA volunteers are SCC students who have been certified by the IRS and completed one semester of a comprehensive tax course. “The students have been trained to alert taxpayers about special credits and deductions for which they are eligible,” said Anna Boulware, SCC professor of accounting and VITA site coordinator.

Taxpayers who are interested in the free service must bring the following documents: wage and earnings statements (Form W-2) from all employers, interest statements (Forms 1099-INT and 1099-DIV), a copy of last year’s tax return, copies of social security cards (including children) and other relevant information about income and expenses. All information will be kept confidential.
