1 of 3: Due to Kitty Vagely’s (District 1) recent resignation, there is a vacancy within the 7 member Oakmont Borough Council. This vacancy offers an opportunity to create a more equitable representation of constituents. As of April 2012, there are 2,444 (49.1%) Democrats and 1,954 Republicans (39.3%) registered to vote in Oakmont. On Council, there is 1 member representing the Democratic majority, Nancy Ride (District 5) and 5 members including Elena Colianni (District 1), Tim Favo (District 4), Tim Milberger (District 2), Laurie Saxon (District 2) and Ron Scott (District 1), representing the Republican minority. Consequently, I submitted my letter of interest to Council on Monday evening, August 13 for consideration as a candidate to fill the vacancy as a resident of District 4. I was originally elected to Council in November 2007 and served as Vice-President during that time, however family responsibilities necessitated my resignation after just 18 months. An appointment to Council would provide me with the opportunity to serve the community and to continue the work begun a few years ago: consistent outreach to constituents through website and email, clear and respectful communications and responsiveness to citizens’ concerns.

2 of 3: I adopted Oakmont as my hometown in 1993 and found that I chose a community that prides itself on a rich tradition of caring, cooperation and collaboration. That can only continue when caring people communicate with their constituents and cooperate with one another to improve the quality of life within town. After a 38 year career in education as a teacher and administrator, I established my own consulting enterprise, Cardinal Consulting Group, Inc. and am self-employed as a professional educational consultant and coach. I currently provide professional development programs, curriculum mapping facilitation and comprehensive planning services to schools, libraries and other nonprofit agencies in Southwestern PA. I also work for the University of Pittsburgh’s TriState Area School Study Council in a similar capacity.

3 of 3: In addition, I’ve served the community in a variety of ways. I was a trustee at the Oakmont Carnegie Library for 10 years and helped to complete the library’s renovation, addition and accessibility construction project. I was a member of the eINetwork Advisory Board for the Allegheny County Library Association and an ombudsman for the Allegheny County Department of Health and Human Services where I visited personal and nursing care facilities to observe their delivery of services to clients. For the past several years I’ve promoted our town by writing the Oakmont Neighborhood Report for Shady Ave Magazine. Council plans to interview some of the applicants for the vacancy on August 29 and to have a new member appointed by mid-September. My appointment to Council would ensure additional 2 party representation and enhance the opportunity for diversity of opinion.
