King of Righteousness

Who is this mystery man?

There seems to be some confusion about the Biblical character MelchiTzedek.  The Greek scriptures refer to him as a man, “without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the son of G-d, remaining a priest continually” (Heb.7:1-3).

However, in Judaism we believe this person to be Shem, one of Noah's son.

In the Hebrew scriptures, we read how Abram(renamed Abraham later in scripture) rescued his nephew Lot after he had been taken captive.  The King of Salem came out to thank Abram for his kindness and blessed both Abram and    G-d.  Unfortunately, he blessed Abram first and then blessed G-d.

It's important to remember that MelchiTzedek isn't a name, but a title.  It means King of Righteousnes.  It comes from two Hebrew words Melech (King) and Tzedek (Righteous).

There were many kings over the years who bore the title of MelchiTzedek.  King David being one of them.
