Dance Revolution: A Male Coach Helps Dance Team Go Big

An O'Fallon dad reflects on the saying 'Students may never remember everything you teach them, but they will always remember how you made them feel.'

One of my favorite educational quotes goes something like this..."Students may never remember everything you teach them, but they will always remember how you made them feel."

My daughter went to Florida for the UDA Nationals Dance Competition. Their goal was to make it into finals for the first time.  Her team put in hours of work, paid a choreographer, and even missed-out on some other things in life in order to make the weekend practices (including Sundays).

The results? Every team from Missouri that went made it to finals except my daughter's team.

Now, her dance team is actually very good. They get first or second place all the time at local and state competitions. It just seems when they try for something big, they can't quite make it.

So who wins these things? Well this year (and maybe in the past as well) a team with a guy coach won. Yup, a man coached a girl's dance team to win nationals. A man that resembles a football coach more than a dance coach managed to get it done. How is this possible you ask?

Because the girls on his team not only love to dance and are good at it, but they love him as well. There isn't any drama. There aren't girls arguing on Facebook or putting down other teams on Twitter.

The parents are onboard, the kids are onboard and his program is set-up for success.

He doesn't make any excuses. He doesn't play favorites. He has the same rules for every single one of his girls, no exceptions. And as I said before, his dancers love him. They would do anything to make him proud.

He lets them know he has their best interest in mind at all times. Nothing more, nothing less. The girls have picked-up on this and so have the parents. Take another look at that quote, this time with some emphasis added.

"Students may never remember everything you teach them, but they will always remember how you made them feel."
