ISS - Why Should The School Pay?

Parents need to be charged!

Kids are getting in trouble all the time at school.  Sometimes they get a warning from the teacher, other times they miss a recess.  If the offense is big enough, the student may recieve in-school suspension.

This is bascially when a student has to go to a room and substitute teacher has to come in and supervise the student for the length of the suspension.

Depending on the district, this can cost anywhere between $75 and $100 each day.  Why does the school district have to absorb this cost?

Parents should be sent a bill if their child misbehaves so poorly they receive an in-school suspension.  If parents had to cough-up some money every time their kid pushes the limit of acceptable behavior, then it might get their attention.

I teach in a private school.  One of the students said something incredibly rude to me.  The principal said to me that if that student ever says anything like that again, that student loses the right to learn with me...for the rest of the year.  Since I'm the only teacher that teaches that particular subject, this would have been a disaster for the kid.

When this was conveyed to the parents things changed.  No longer was the student misbehaving.  He behaves now and his parents are in contact and responding to my calls and emails.

I'm willing to admit this won't work for special needs children.  When my oldest daughter was in elementary school, my wife and I were very involved.  However, my daughter had a situation that required medication (not ADD) and once she was on it, things improved greatly.

But for those kids who spin out of control for no reason other than trying to get attention or refusing to work in class, they should be put in in-school suspension and the parents should have to pay for it.
