Scary Movie Marathon at SCC Oct. 21-24

Don’t be frightened, come to St. Charles Community College’s fifth annual Scary Movie Marathon Oct. 21-24, hosted by the Student Activities Office. A different movie will be shown each night. Guest speakers will precede each movie.

Movies will be shown at 7 p.m. Monday-Thursday, Oct. 21-24, in the auditorium of the Daniel J. Conoyer Social Sciences Building on the college campus in Cottleville, with guest lectures starting at 6:30 p.m.

Mitch Harden, assistant professor of psychology, has been a guest speaker for every Scary Movie Marathon at SCC. “I see this as a great opportunity to get people interested in psychology by tying such a fun event to science,” said Harden. 

Each year Harden has spoken about psychological topics ranging from fear to a brief on Bloody Mary. “This year I’ll be talking about the rare occasions where we have found feral children and how isolation affects their development,” said Harden. “This is interesting, because we have learned more about normal development by studying these deficits.”

The event is free and open to the public. Free popcorn will be available, and beverages and other snacks will be available to purchase.

SCC Scary Movie Marathon Schedule: (All R-rated films require students under the age of 17 to be accompanied by an adult upon entry.)

Monday, Oct. 21
6:30 p.m. – “Genie’s Got a Grunt: What We’ve Learned From Real Feral Children,” with Mitch Harden, assistant professor of psychology.
7 p.m. – Mama (2013). This film is rated PG-13. 

Tuesday, Oct. 22
6:30 p.m. – “Salem Witches and Modern Witchcraft: Fact and Fiction,” with English instructor Christina Gant and adjunct faculty member Kate Weber.
7 p.m. – The Conjuring (2013). This film is rated R.

Wednesday, Oct. 23
6:30 p.m. – “I Heart Zombies: The Evolution of Zombies and Our Obsession With Them,” with Grace Moser, assistant professor of history, and Corey Porter, assistant professor of English and literature.
7 p.m. – Evil Dead (2013). This film is rated R.

Thursday, Oct. 24
6:30 p.m. – “Behave or the Boogeyman Will Get You,” with reference librarian Theresa Flett.
7 p.m. – Sinister (2012). This film is rated R. 

“The best way to watch scary movies is with a crowd,” said Harden. “Come to this shared experience with the fun of a scary movie plus a heap of interesting knowledge on top.”
