Fort Zumwalt Is First Missouri School District With Propane-Powered Buses

Each bus is expected to save the district $3,000 per year.

The Fort Zumwalt School District has eight propane buses in its fleet, and it plans to have 22 more on the streets by the start of school.

The district says that the buses are quieter, and much more environmentally friendly, since they cut 60 percent of the carbon monoxide, 12 percent of the carbon dioxide, 20 percent of the nitrogen oxide and as much as 25 percent of the greenhouse gases their gasoline-powered predecessors used.

The district anticipates saving $3,000 per bus per year, according to Chief Financial Officer Jeff Orr, and hopes to have 100 to 125 propane buses on their routes by 2018.
