Notebook: St. Dominic Girls Soccer Keeps Rolling

The Crusaders are 14-3 and have won 13 of their past 14 games.

The girls soccer team won the 20th annual St. Dominic/Howell North Shootout for the first time after defeating Cor Jesu Academy, 2-1, on Saturday. The Crusaders are 14-3 and have won 13 of their past 14 games.

St. Dominic will host St. Charles West (12-2) in a showdown between two of the area’s top teams on Monday, followed by another home match against Visitation on Tuesday, with each game at 4:15 p.m. In fact, the Crusaders are slated to play seven games in nine days beginning on Monday. Visitation won the Class 2 state championship last season.

Sophomore captain Cristina Rodriguez, who scored a goal against Cor Jesu, leads the Crusaders with 13 goals this season. Goalkeeper Megan Swanson has a 0.53 goals-against average and has all 14 wins for head coach Greg Koeller.

The Francis Howell North golf team finished fifth in last Wednesday’s Class 4 District 4 tournament at Innsbrook Golf Club. The Knights had an overall score of 334, which was 31 strokes behind first-place Francis Howell. The event included 10 schools.

Howell North was led by Austin Klackner’s 83, which was good for 19th place and qualifies him for a trip to the state sectional meet next Wednesday at Old Hickory Golf Course in St. Peter’s. Joining Klackner at sectionals will be Clint Toedtmann (84) while teammate Shane Baechle shot an 87 to narrowly miss advancing.

The Fort Zumwalt West golf team placed sixth at Innsbrook with a team score of 350. The Jaguars were paced by Connor Brady, who shot an 84 to place 21st. He will be ’s sole representative at the sectionals. Jared Wooten shot an 86 for the Jaguars.

The Christian (O’Fallon) High School golf team finished third out of 11 teams at the Class 2 District 2 meet last Thursday at the Landings at Spirit Golf Club in Chesterfield. Christian shot a 381, but Whitfield dominated the field with an outstanding team score of 326.

The Panthers managed to qualify three golfers for next Wednesday’s sectional meet at Cape Girardeau Country Club. Jake Hare shot an 89 to place 10th, Evan Marcks’ 91 was good for 11th and Samuel Henderson shot a 93 to place 12th.

The Barat Academy golf team placed fourth at the Landings with a team score of 400. Four individuals will compete for in sectionals at Cape Girardeau. Trevor William Cronin is the team’s ace golfer, and he fired an 85 to place sixth at districts.

Cory Schallert shot a 100 to place 18th, followed by teammates Chase Peterson (102) and James Michael Kvesic (104).
