Notebook: Zumwalt North Baseball Leading GAC North

Fort Zumwalt North baseball is 10-4 overall after its win over Fort Zumwalt South in a battle for first place.

The Fort Zumwalt North baseball team enters play this week atop the Gateway Athletic Conference North with a 3-0 record. The Panthers are 10-4 overall after their important 10-2 victory last Thursday over Fort Zumwalt South in a battle for first place.

Zumwalt North is ahead of Zumwalt East and Zumwalt South, as each of those teams is 3-1 in the GAC North. In the 10-2 win, coach Steve Siebert saw ace senior starting pitcher Joey Siegler improve to a team-best 4-1 after throwing six innings and allowing two runs and striking out seven batters. Siegler has thrown 30 innings this season, and has a 3.50 earned-run average. At the plate, Sieger is batting .452 with 14 runs batted in.

The primary offensive star for the Panthers has been first baseman Dre Gleason, who is the catalyst for a league-leading offense averaging 7.8 runs per game. Gleason is batting .458 and leads Zumwalt North with 17 runs, 22 hits, four home runs and 23 RBI.

The Panthers are slated to play Christian-O’Fallon on Monday at 4:15 p.m. at T.R. Hughes Ballpark in O’Fallon, but the weather forecast and weekend rain is likely to postpone the game. They are scheduled to host Zumwalt East on Tuesday, and Ritenour on Wednesday.

Christian High baseball is 7-7 this season heading into its scheduled Monday contest. The Eagles are also set to play Trinity on Tuesday at Forestwood at 7 p.m. Leading the Christian offense is Billy Billings, who is batting a team-high .532. Billings also leads the team with 22 runs and 25 hits, and has driven in 14 runs. Eli Dilday leads the Eagles with 22 RBI and is batting .417 with eight doubles.

Fort Zumwalt West baseball (8-9) is off to a rough beginning to its GAC North schedule at 0-2. The Jaguars have dropped three straight after losing 12-3 last Thursday to league foe Francis Howell. They will play at Holt on Tuesday and will then host De Smet on Wednesday. Both games are at 4;15 p.m.
