O'Fallon Christian Takes District Crown; Zumwalt West Girls Fall in Heartbreaker

O'Fallon Christian defeats Winfield, 73-52, in the Class 3 District 8 championship.

used a red-hot third quarter to defeat Winfield, 73-52, in the Class 3 District 8 championship game on Saturday night.

The Eagles (19-8) have won eight of their past nine games, and will play Elsberry (23-4) on Wednesday at Moberly Area Community College at 6 p.m. in the first round of the Class 3 State Tournament.

Already leading at halftime 33-27, O'Fallon Christian outscored Winfield 19-9 in the third quarter, and 40-25 in the second half, to wrap up the district title and end the Warriors’ season at 19-9.

Senior guard Andrew Frank shot 12-for-18 from the field for 27 points, while junior forward Adam Glenville added 12 points and senior forward Blake Meers 10. Glenville leads the Eagles this season with an average of 16.9 points per game, followed by Meers at 15.0.

Meanwhile, the girls had a completely opposite district championship game experience. The Jaguars’ season ended in cruel fashion in the Class 5 girls quarterfinal at the University of Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday night.

Zumwalt West rallied in the fourth quarter to finally tie Incarnate Word Academy (25-5) at 45 with just over two minutes remaining. The game stayed tied until Incarnate Word freshman guard Nakiah Bell drilled a 3-pointer as time expired to give the Red Knights the district championship, 48-45.

Just like that, coach Monica Tritz saw her team lose another tight game to Incarnate Word, and saw the season end for the Jaguars at 25-5.

Zumwalt West shot very poorly in the first half, and trailed at halftime, 23-16. Each team tallied 13 third-quarter points before Zumwalt West began to rally in the final period.

Incarnate Word has beaten the Jaguars six consecutive times, including three times this season by a combined total of just six points.

Jasmine Swopshire led Zumwalt West with 15 points in her final high school game.
