Preview: Area Teams Poised For Spring Postseason

The next three weeks will feature postseason competition across each of the spring sports.

The next three weeks will feature postseason competition across each of the spring sports. Here is a preview and quick-hit look at where area teams will be playing over the next several days:

DISTRICT GIRLS SOCCER

Class 3 District 8 at Troy Buchanan

Top-seeded Fort Zumwalt West has a bye, and will play the winner of Monday’s match between fourth-seeded Fort Zumwalt North (7-15) against fifth-seeded Holt (5:30 p.m.) in the semifinals. That match will be played at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Zumwalt West is 15-6-1, and won the Gateway Athletic Conference South with a 4-1 mark. The Jaguars have relied on a well-balanced offense and supreme goalkeeping from senior Emilee Johnson, who sports a 0.60 goals-against average and has 11 shutouts. Sophomore forward Maggie Richard leads the team with seven goals and 20 points.

The district championship match is slated for 5 p.m. on Thursday.

Class 2 District 8, at St. Dominic

Top-seeded St. Dominic beat No. 4 Warrenton at home on Saturday, 4-0. The Crusaders are 18-6 and won the Archdiocesan Athletic Association at 7-0. Leading the charge for the state-title hopeful team has been sophomore Cristina Rodriguez with 15 goals, including one on Saturday. Freshman goalkeeper Megan Swanson has an amazing 14 shutouts.

St. Charles West (16-5) beat Duchesne, 3-2, in overtime on Saturday in the other district semifinal. The Warriors will face St. Dominic in the district final at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Class 1 District 7, at Orchard Farm

O'Fallon Christian (4-10) will face top-seeded Orchard Farm at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The winner will play the winner of the match between second-seeded Barat Academy vs. Lutheran St. Charles at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Barat is 6-9, but is capable of an upset behind potent striker Sarah Lammers. She scored 11 goals and added nine assists this season.

DISTRICT BASEBALL

Class 4 District 8 at Fort Zumwalt West

In one of the top districts around St. Louis, sixth-seed Fort Zumwalt West (12-13) plays third-seed Zumwalt East (17-8) at 4 p.m. on Monday, and No. 4-seed Zumwalt North (14-7-2) plays No. 5 Zumwalt South (11-9), also at 4 p.m. That game will be played at Zumwalt South.

Zumwalt North has been led by a trio of offensive stars this season. Senior Joey Siegler is batting .493 and has 10 doubles. Senior Wade Rothermich is hitting .452 and has a team-high 38 hits and six home runs. Sophomore Dre Gleason is batting .419 and has a team-best 34 runs batted in.

On the mound, Siegler is 5-2 with a 3.24 earned-run average in 41 innings.

Zumwalt West features junior Tommy Hager, who is hitting .420 with 27 RBI. Jaguars pitcher Tyler Kummer is 6-3 with a 3.45 ERA in a team-best 47 innings.

St. Dominic (16-8), an 8 seed, will face top-seed and state-title hopeful Francis Howell (22-3) at 1:30 p.m. at Zumwalt South on Monday.

The semifinals (Tuesday) and district championship game on Thursday will be played at the host site.

Class 3 District 6 at Winfield

Sixth-seeded O’Fallon-Christian (10-11) will play No. 3-seed Orchard Farm at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. The semifinal games will be at 4:30 and 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Class 2 District 5 at Brentwood

Barat Academy plays Crossroads on Monday afternoon. A victory would send Barat to the semifinals (TBD). Barat is 12-7, and features pitcher Cody Heying, who is 3-1 with a 2.14 ERA. Offensively, senior Blake Besancenez is hitting an astounding .568 with 30 runs and 21 RBI.

STATE GOLF

At the Class 4 state championship (Monday and Tuesday) at Twin Oaks Country Club in Springfield, Mo., Connor Brady from Zumwalt West will be competing.

The Class 2 meet, also on Monday and Tuesday, will be at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield. Barat’s Trevor William Cronin and Evan Marcks from Christian O’Fallon will be among the participants.
