Preparing for an Emergency

Preparing for an emergency is the first step to staying safe.

With the recent tornado in St. Louis, it is important to remember that everyone needs to be prepared in case of an emergency.  There are several things you can do to prepare yourself and your loved one in in the case of an earthquake, tornado, power outage, or other emergency.  Below you can find some tips to help you be prepared:

Keep a list of emergency phone numbers by each telephone in the residence.  Important number to keep are:

  • 911
  • Fire
  • Police
  • Ambulance or other emergency medical services
  • Health-care provider
  • Utility company

Keep emergency supplies on hand, including:

  • Flashlights
  • A portable radio with batteries
  • A backup power supply for any device that would create a life-threatening situation if it stopped working (wheelchair, ventilator, oxygen concentrator, etc.).
  • Canned foods
  • Bottled water
  • Medicines and medical supplies

Register with your local utility company – patients with oxygen systems or other electrically powered medical equipment should register as “priority” electrical users. 

Make emergency plans – know where to go in case of tornado or earthquake.
