Volunteers Needed to Lead Historic Heald Home Tours

The is looking for volunteers to lead educational tours at the historic Darius Heald Home in .

Tours are conducted during events like the the Garden Expo, , and the Bluegrass Concert and Ice Cream Social, as well as by appointment.

Docents are provided with a period costume appropriate to the era and a script describing the home’s rich history.

“This is a good position for anyone with previous experience as a docent, someone wanting to use their theatrical or speaking skills, or who simply enjoys talking to people about history,” Kathy Halstead, O’Fallon’s Volunteer Services Manager said in a news release. “The atmosphere of the home envelops visitors with its historical significance, and guests are eager to learn more about O’Fallon’s early residents.”

Tourism and Festivals Manager Marsha Seymour said the docents present visitors with intriguing historical accounts.

“When the house was built in the late-1800s, it was part of a thriving farm of over 1,000 acres. Stony Point Plantation, as the owner preferred to call it, served as a social center for O’Fallon," Seymour said. "Mr. Heald also donated money to build a new church, helped found a school for young ladies and exhibited horses at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis.”
