The 15th Annual BCI Wing Ding will be held in St. Charles' Frontier Park June 6. Organizers have also made entry to the event free of charge in efforts to boost attendance.
Boone Center Inc. plans to move its annual Wing Ding fundraiser back to St. Charles after having it in O'Fallon for two years. The event is scheduled from 6 to 10 p.m. June 6 in Frontier Park and will include wings, beer, live music and more. The annual chicken wing contest pits about 20 local restaurants against one another for the top honors as determined by celebrity judges and a people's choice award. The fundraiser benefitsBoone Center's mission to provide employment to adults with disabilities. In 15 years, it has helped raise more than $1 million for the cause. Thousands poured into T.R. Hughes Ballpark to munch on endless chicken wings at this year's fourteenth annual BCI Wing Ding competition. Over a dozen local restaurants donated their services to the fundraiser and provided guests with tastes of their best food during the event from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Returning competitors included 2011 “Best Wings” champ Quintessential Dining and Nightlife from St. Charles and Ballyhoo, the “Non-Traditional and First-Time Restaurant” award winner. As guests lingered through the aisles of the ballpark, sounds of the Smash Band permeated the stadium. Smash Band returned for a second year to entertain guests for the entire evening. Chicken wings anyone? The 14th Annual BCI Wing Ding returns to the area Thursday at T.R. Hughes Ball Park and is set to offer up loads of all-you-can-eat chicken wings for sampling from local restaurants. More than a dozen restaurants will compete in the competition and provide guests with tastes of their best food during the event from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Four new restaurants join the ranks this year, said event coordinator Karen Bryner, with Bobby’s Place, Lloyd & Harry’s, Kitaro Bistro of Japan and St. Louis Wing Company ready to make their Wing Ding debut. Sixteen establishments show off chicken wings at T.R. Hughes Ballpark.
As he sat in front of an array of chicken wings in the sweltering stands of T.R. Hughes Ballpark Thursday afternoon, Corey Malone was happy to describe the selection. “That’s a little more of a mustard base,” he said indicating one batch of the great American finger food. “That seems like more of a vinegar,” he points to another. “That has more of a barbecue flavor to it.” But they're all pretty tasty. “It’s a great event,” said Malone who lives near Boschertown. “It’s a good way to see all the different restaurants and get an idea of what they have to offer.” The heat and the economy may have kept a few faces away, but as the 2011 Wing Ding fades into the history books, Malone wasn’t the only one eager to call it a success. Fundraiser raises money to help developmentally disabled adults find employment.
This year, local organization Boone Center, Inc. (BCI ) and the City of O’Fallon are betting that 13 is a lucky number. “We started small and have grown, but we have very loyal supporters who attend the event,” said Linda Buschman, director of development for the St. Peters-based nonprofit. For the first time ever, BCI, an agency which helps secure employment for disabled adults, is bringing its famous Wing Ding festival to O’Fallon. It’s the 13th year for the fundraiser, which offers a tantalizing array of chicken wings from dining establishments across St. Charles County.
