David Goewert, who is challenging the incumbent Bill Hennessy for the post, paid for much of his committee's spending out of his own pocketbook.
In his race to become O'Fallon's next mayor, challenger David Goewert's committee outspent incumbent Bill Hennessy's committee by about $1,400. That's according to campaign finance reports filed with St. Charles County Election Authority on March 25. Documents show that even as Goewert raised less money than his opponent, his committee outspent Hennessey's. Goewert's committee spent $6,412 against Hennessy's $4,958. Goewert, a 43-year-old O'Fallon police officer, is the primary contributor to his campaign. Of the $6,412 raised this election season, Goewert's own pocketbook accounted for about half. Hennessy, a 55-year-old incumbent seeking his second term as mayor, raised $7,868 in that same period. That's in addition to the $10,301 his…

Planning and Zoning approves updated site plan for Chick-Fil-A and questions amount of metal in MEMC building design at Thursday's meeting.
At Thursday night’s Planning and Zoning meeting, the commission approved an updated site plan for the Chick-Fil-A that is to be built in the block near the intersection of Laura Hill Road and Highway K. The new site plan called for an additional drive through lane to reduce traffic at the Chick-Fil-A. GBC Design Site Engineer Allan Wiley said Chick-Fil-A expects the site will draw a lot of customers. “They have a feeling that that site is going to do well, have a lot of business,” Wiley said. “So they wanted to add the second drive through lane in order to help alleviate any kind of wait time while you are going through it and getting your food.” The commission also forwarded plans for a new building at the MEMC campus to the Board of …

City officials surprise local family by naming all-inclusive playground after 9-year-old who conquers his disability's challenges.
When Mayor Bill Hennessy called Brendan Schmitt and his family up on stage Saturday during the groundbreaking for O’Fallon’s all-inclusive playground, Brendan and his family had no idea what was about to happen. But then, neither did Hennessy. “The stage almost fell over,” said Brendan, 9, of O'Fallon. “The mayor didn’t know almost half the people there were Brendan’s family,” said Brendan’s mom, Michelle Schmitt, who laughed at the thought of all the uncles, aunts, cousins and grandparents trooping up on stage. “We have a large family who loves Brendan very dearly. The back of the stage started sinking in the mud,” she said. The mishap averted, Brendan’s Westhoff Elementary schoolmates unfurled a banner onstage as Hennessy gave a surprise…

Our special series looks at the people behind the latest census count, which puts O'Fallon's growth at 71.8 percent over the past decade.
Mike McMullen’s father questioned his son’s sanity when McMullen moved to O’Fallon back in 2002. “He said, ‘You’re crazy for moving way out there away from everything,’” McMullen said. He moved to Missouri from Arizona after his minor leage baseball career ended to be closer to his dad, who lived in Chesterfield, and liked what he saw in O’Fallon. “I don’t need to cross the bridge for anything,” said McMullen, now an insurance agent at Country Insurance in O’Fallon and varsity pitching coach for Fort Zumwalt West High School. Three years later after McMullen moved to town, his dad moved to O'Fallon. They now live less than five miles apart. The McMullens rode the crest of a wave heading to O’Fallon. The 2010 Census shows O’Fallon grew 71.…
