Update: Winter Storm Ends, Effects Linger

Crews still work to clear roads as winter storm passes and brings more than three inches of snow to the O'Fallon area.

The blizzard warning has come to an end in the St. Louis area, but effects of the winter storm still linger, according to the National Weather Service.  The Missouri State Highway Patrol continues to discourage travel Wednesday citing dangerous road "treacherous" road conditions. Troopers said the freezing rain, sleet, heavy snow, wind, and bitterly cold temperatures has made driving treacherous and dangerous and all highways and interstates continue to be snow covered.   The Missouri Department of Transportation reports Interstate 70 from Wentzville to Kansas City re-opened Wednesday morning, but said most area  interstates are still snow and ice covered while Interstate 44, at the Missouri/Oklahoma state line remains closed. County Executive Declares State of Emergency

O'Fallon and St. Charles County officials prepare as a historic storm heads through the area.

As snow and ice continues to cover O’Fallon, St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann declared a State of Emergency in St. Charles County at noon on Tuesday, according to a news release. A blizzard warning is in effect in the metro area until Wednesday at noon, with wind gusts predicted to reach up to 35 mph. Captain Dave Todd, who heads the County’s Division of Emergency Management, said the State of Emergency declaration makes the County eligible for state resources and equipment, including help from the National Guard. “We have a potential crisis, and we want to stay out in front of this,” Todd said. “The National Guard will coordinate rescue operations for us.” Gov. Jay Nixon declared a State of Emergency on Monday and instructed the…

MoDOT Urges Drivers to Stay Off Roads

With wind gusts predicted, visibility could drop to zero. If that happens, MoDOT officials say even their plows will have to stay off the roads.

Missouri Department of Transportation officials are urging residents to get wherever they need to be to wait out the coming storm by noon. After that, they say, roads will only get worse. “The morning rush hour is going to be the best conditions we see all day,” said Becky Allmeroth, district maintenance engineer. Allmeroth said current forecasts call for a heavy band of snow to hit the metro area in a few hours. The storm could drop up to two inches of snow per hour. She said west and north St. Louis County, as well as St. Charles County could see the snow as soon as 10 a.m. A blizzard warning is in effect for the metro area, with wind gusts predicted to reach up to 35 mph. Allmeroth said that warning is rare. “In my 15 years with MoDOT, …

Five Things: Numbers to Call for Help, Information

Here's a list of contacts you may find helpful during the winter storm.

Editor's note: This story has been revised. An earlier version stated incorrectly that the number for MoDOT's Road Conditions was *55.  Today's winter weather is severe. The National Weather Service, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) and other government entities are urging residents not to leave their homes unless necessary. The state government Web site offers a Winter Weather Guide with important safety advice and links to the MoDOT Traveler Information Map and storm alert information. Tune into radio, television, or NOAA Weather Radio for weather reports and emergency information. If you need assistance there are several numbers you can call for help.
