Residents React to Menards Withdrawing Plans to Build in O'Fallon

A spokesman for the home-improvement chain said plans were withdrawn to build a new store on the O'Fallon-Lake Saint Louis- border, due to President Barack Obama's policies.

Earlier this week, a Menards spokesman cited President Barack Obama's policies as the reason for pulling the plug on plans to build a new store on the O'Fallon-Lake Saint Louis border. Some Patch readers said they support the decison, while others said they aren't buying the reasoning.  O'Fallon Patch reported on Dec. 6, according to documents in the O'Fallon Planning and Zoning Commission meeting agenda packet, representatives from the store requested to withdraw the applications for the conditional use permit, site plan and rezoning for the project at the end of November.  O'Fallon Planning and Development Director David Woods said he was told the decision was made looking at the "big picture," which included the economic direction of …

I'm curious, Greg, can you share any details about this small business of yours? Specifics? How exactly has Obama made the future "so uncertain". More info is needed, thanks.   more ›

Starbucks Expanding: Do We Need More of The Coffee Shops?

The coffee company reportedly plans to add at least 1,500 cafes in the U.S. over the next five years.

The Associated Press is reporting Wednesday that the world’s largest coffee company plans to add at least 1,500 cafes in the U.S. over the next five years. The report indicates that Starbucks would have more than 20,000 cafes by 2014, up from its current count of about 18,000. The AP is also reporting the Seattle-based company also plans to move from its current Tazo tea and begin serving Teavana, which it announced it would acquire last month. There are currently two Starbucks locations in O'Fallon. One is located at 2028 Highway K, and the other at 4581 Highway K.  What do you think? Do you welcome more Starbucks? Are you happy to see the company grow, or are there enough Starbucks already? Tell us in the comments below.

Starbucks just closed a whole host of stores a couple years ago because the demand for coffee at those locations wasn't there. Is Starbucks a glutton for punishment?   more ›

Mizzou Fans: New Store Explodes Black and Gold Gear

The University of Missouri-themed store quietly opened Aug. 29, but with a new sign installed Wednesday, it's set for a grand opening next Thursday.

It's probably a lament often heard in Mizzou Nation: Where can I lay my hands on a bottle opener that plays "Fight Tigers" when I pop the top of my brew? The answer is here at last. The Mizzou Store opened in the Chesterfield Valley on Aug. 29, but has its official grand opening next week. And if you visit the store at 10 THF Boulevard, near the eastern end of the massive retail strip mall off of Highway 40, prepare yourself: You might overload on black and gold. There are T-shirts and sweatshirts, bottle cozys and blankets. There is even that bottle opener we mentioned earlier.  "I think that's pretty crazy. That makes me laugh," said Michelle Froese, spokesman for The Mizzou Store. "We also have grill accessories so you can brand your …
