Three men were found in a vacant St. Charles home Sunday, hiding out after they stole items from cars in the Sunnydale Mobile Home Community, St. Charles Police said. Police said the three planned to leave for California three days later and were going to money from selling the stolen items to fund the trip. The three men were found in a home on the first block of Greendale Drive after a neighbor spotted them entering the mobile home. They are: Hamilton and Zamarripa both were charged with second-degree burglary and felony theft. Zamarripa also was charged with resisting arrest. A man stole his neighbor’s car Oct. 29 and drove it to Illinois after the neighbor told him he couldn’t borrow it, police said. A St. Charles County deputy reported that Timothy J. Conway, 24, of Barberry Lane near O’Fallon, asked to borrow his neighbor’s 2000 Pontiac Grand Am. The neighbor told police she refused because she’d known Conway only for two weeks and because he was drunk. She also told him the plates were expired and the tires were bad. At about midnight, the woman noticed the car was gone. Conway told police he took the vehicle, but didn’t feel he committed a crime because he returned it, according to a St. Charles County Sheriff's Department report. Police say the chase began after a call regarding a 29-year-old O'Fallon man attempting to set his step-father on fire.
A Caruthersville police officer is dead after an early morning police chase beginning in O'Fallon. O'Fallon Police say they received a call around 9:30 p.m. on Monday to the 2000 block of Williamstown Drive, where a 29-year-old man reportedly set a fire in the garage and attempted to set his step-father on fire. The suspect lead police on a chase that ended in Caruthersville when he crashed. According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Officer Evan Burns, 28, was killed in the collision. O'Fallon Police say the suspect was taken into custody and the department will purse charges with the St. Charles County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.
