Crusaders Defense Smothers St. Charles West

The Crusaders picked up second win of the week after topping Lutheran-St. Charles on Tuesday.

At St. Dominic High School, the defense never rests. In fact, it is the Crusaders' rock-solid defense that fuels their success. The St. Dominic stop unit was at its finest on Thursday night leading the way to a 53-31 win over St. Charles West in a non-league contest at West. The Crusaders improved to 13-5 with their sixth win in a row. They have won 12 out of 14 games since a sluggish 1-3 start.      The defending Class 4 state champs put the clamps down with a second-quarter defensive effort that would have made a college coach envious.     "I'm absolutely thrilled," said St. Dominic coach Suzie Mennemeier. "This is what I always thought they were capable of. And it's coming at the right time - right before districts."      The Crusaders …

Crusaders Head to Elite Eight

St. Dominic beats Moberly 2-0 for fifth win in a row

St. Dominic goalkeeper Travis Abt likes variety when it comes to his uniform top.    "Being a senior, I wanted to wear a different color every game," he said. "I'm not superstitious or anything. I just thought it would be something fun to do."     The man of many colors brought out a dark blue shirt for Tuesday's Class 2 sectional game against Moberly.      It worked.     The Spartans left Crusader Stadium feeling blue as Abt posted his second successive post-season shutout to lead St. Dominic to a 2-0 win.     The victory sends the Crusaders (16-9-1) into the Final Eight where they will likely take on unbeaten Priory on Saturday with a berth in the state tournament at stake.     Sophomore Dominic Recca and senior Daniel McAteer scored for…

Crusaders Roll Into Sectionals

The St. Dominic High School boys soccer team is on a roll.     The Crusaders will take a four-match winning streak into a Class 2 Sectional contest against Moberly (19-7) on Tuesday night at St. Dominic High. The winner of the 6 p.m. affair advances to face either Priory or St. Francis Borgia in a quarterfinal-round contest on Saturday.     Moberly beat Hannibal 1-0 to win the District 8 crown on Friday.     St. Dominic has outscored its opponents 13-2 during the winning streak. The Crusaders beat Duchesne 1-0 in overtime to capture the District 7 championship on Thursday night. Late Goal Gives Crusaders Win Against Fort Zumwalt East

Overtime goal by St. Dominic drops Lions.

Soccer forwards who perform in clutch situations are worth their weight in gold.  And St. Dominic Crusader forward Conor Baker’s goal early in the second overtime period gave his team a 2-1 win over the Fort Zumwalt East Lions last night in the first round of the St. Dominic-FastLane Super Cup Boys Varsity Soccer at St. Dominic High School. Baker said he was disappointed in a shot he missed earlier in the game.  “I had to redeem myself,” he said.  Baker scored at the 9:39 mark in the second overtime. Overtime play lasts 10-minutes unless a goal is scored to bring the contest to the end. Midfielder Mark Steiniger attempted a cross which was knocked down by Lion goalkeeper CJ Vaccaro. Within just seconds Baker took control of the ball and …

Crusader Girls Overcome Early Scare

The St. Dominic girls' basketball team defeated St. Charles West 67-52 after a big second half run to maintain their perfect season record.

Fans may be excused for mistaking the relatively subdued atmosphere of the St. Dominic High School gymnasium for something other than the home of an undefeated, top-ranked girls’ basketball team on Thursday night.  “Oh, we had the band and the cheerleaders here for the game the other night,” said St. Dominic coach Suzie Mennemeier. Different night, but same result, a convincing Crusaders victory, this time over St. Charles West by a score of 67-52. The Warriors took the game in the first half, going up by five points late in the first quarter on a pair of baskets by senior guard Blake French, who led all scorers on the evening with 23 points. The second quarter continued to provide a scare for the Crusaders, as senior Aisha Buxcel dropped …

Crusaders Cruise to 16-0 Record With Win Over Cardinal Ritter

Despite an early scare from the Raiders, the top-ranked St. Dominic girls basketball team used defense to get back in the game and prevail to keep their perfect record.

Sporting a freshly minted number one ranking in Missouri Class 4, the St. Dominic Crusaders girl’s basketball team hosted the Cardinal Ritter Raiders Thursday night. Ritter, with a late start on the season, brought a solid 5-1 record to the contest and tested the Crusaders early in the game. The Crusaders team defense and some key baskets from senior Leslie Wilmes, who led all scorers with 17 points, helped the hosts prevail as they improved their record to a perfect 16-0. The Raiders opened up with a strong first quarter behind Chastity Franklin’s seven points. The Cardinal Ritter freshman guard would go on to score a total of 15 on the night, tying her with senior Tiara Baker as the top scorers in the losing effort. Baker hit a key …

St. Dominic Boys Wrap Up Imo's Christmas Tournament

Crusaders defeat Wolves for consolation championship on Thursday.

A tournament championship would have been ideal, but the Crusaders say they were happy with their 55-24 victory over the Timberland Wolves on Thursday in the Imo's Christmas Tournament. The St. Dominic boys suffered a loss to Parkway North on Monday, but after defeating Lutheran St. Charles on Wednesday, they were well on their way to winning the consolation tournament. "Obviously winning the tournament was where we wanted to be, but we are just as excited to win the consolation tournament," coach Kurt Schneider said. After a big start and an 11-5 lead after the first quarter, the Crusaders were close to letting Timberland catch up. St. Dominic allowed Timberland to go on a 6-0 run at one point, before the half ended with the score 20-19 …

St. Dominic Enters Consolation Tournament After Loss to Parkway North

Crusaders lose, 47-42, against Vikings in first game of annual Imo's Christmas Tournament.

St. Dominic lost 47-42 against Parkway North High School in their first game of the 17th annual Imo's Christmas Tournament on Monday night. The game drew an uncharacteristically large crowd of both Parkway North supporters and Crusaders fans, dressed in their Christmas best, filling each end of the stands. The Crusaders won the opening tipoff, scored in less than five seconds, and although they defended well they were evenly matched through the first quarter and the Vikings would keep the score even at 12. The game took a heated turn in the second period, when some pushing and shoving started, set off by a Parkway player delivering an elbow to the face of senior Mitchell Runge. The tension continued for the second and third quarters until …

Crusaders Defeat Eureka 43-40 at GAC/Suburban Shootout

St. Dominic seals fourth win in seven outings this season.

All St. Dominic senior guard Mitchell Runge needed was a few calming words from a teammate.    Runge hit one of two foul shots with 50 seconds left Saturday to lift the Crusaders to a 43-40 win over Eureka in the Gateway Athletic Conference/Suburban Basketball Challenge at the Family Arena. First, the 5-foot-11 Runge broke a 40-40 tie. He then hit two more free throws with 5 seconds left to seal the Crusaders' fourth win in seven outings this season. Prior to the go-ahead free throw, St. Dominic sophomore Alex Hagan gave Runge a few words of advice before he stepped to the line.     "He said, 'Relax, take a deep breath and make it'," Runge said. "It helped." The foul shots settled a back-and-forth affair that saw St. Dominic rally from a …
