The 2012 football season is in the books for most the Gateway Athletic Conference teams. Yes, it's time for another edition of the St. Charles County Athlete of the Week fan poll. Except this week has a twist. Instead of looking at the last week, we're looking at the entire season.  Tell us in the poll below: Who was the top GAC football player in 2012? Shane Barrett—Fort Zumwalt East: The Lions sophomore quarterback had a solid first season leading the East offense. As a passer, Barrett was 80-for-169 for 1,441 yards and 17 touchdowns against 10 interceptions. Running the ball, Barrett was tied for the GAC Central in touchdowns with 13. He actually led the conference with 82 points scored thanks to two successful two-point conversions. …

Matchups Set for District Football Playoffs

Week 10 kicks off the new-look Missouri football playoff format.

Week 10 of the high school football season in Missouri is no longer a battle to improve playoff standings. Instead, it's a chance to keep playing—or see a season end.  Wanting to have every regular season game count, the powers that be changed the playoff format this season. A complex point system was created to make sure every game played weighed into the playoff seeding. Shane Barrett—Fort Zumwalt East: Fort Zumwalt East pulled out a one-point win against Washington Friday night. A key player for the Lions? Sophomore quarterback Shane Barrett. Once again the dual-threat QB got things done through the air and on the ground. He ran the ball 22 times for 115 yards (5.2 yards per carry). Throwing the ball, he was 16-for-24 for 171 yards and four scores against just one interception. Clay Stulce—Duchesne: The Duchesne Pioneers had a huge 42-14 win against St. Charles in Week 8. …

Matt Etherton—Fort Zumwalt East: The Lions are 5-1 and got win No. 5 in a big win against rival Zumwalt South. The quarterback-receiver combo of Shane Barrett and Matt Etherton had a big game. Etherton had just four catches, but he made them count en route to 105 yards receiving. Athlete of the Week: Zumwalt East's Barrett Wins Top Honors

Fort Zumwalt East quarterback Shane Barrett wins the fan's choice for top football player from Week 5.

Shane Barret's arm and leg led Zumwalt East to a big Week 5 win. Passing and running, Barret helped push the Lions past rival Zumwalt North. His performance not only helped the Lions win the game, it helped him winthe Patch St. Charles County Athlete of the Week award.  Here's how the voting broke down: Which St. Charles County football player had the best Week 5?   The Lions' sophomore signal caller led East to a 38-26 win against rival Zumwalt North. The win pushed the Lions to 4-1 on the season. Against North, Barrett was a difference maker. He carried the ball 27 times for 110 yards (4.1 yards a carry) and two touchdowns. Brody Allen—Francis Howell Central: The Howell Central Spartans finally broke through and picked up a win in Week 5 and a large reason was the play of quarterback Brody Allen. In the Spartans 34-0 blanking of Howell North, Allen had his hands in two touchdowns—one with his arm and one with his legs. He was just 6-for-14 throwing the ball, but he did complete at 6-yard TD pass. He really showed off on the ground. With 16 carries, Allen racked up 123 yards (7.7 yards a carry). He lone touchdown came on a 26-yard …

Athlete of the Week: Zumwalt East's Taylor Wins Award

Fort Zumwalt East's Nikki Taylor is the fan choice for top softball player from the first part of the 2012 season.

Fort Zumwalt East's Nikki Taylor's start to the season did not go unnoticed.  The Tigers' slugger—who leads the team in most offensive categories—won the Patch St. Charles County Athlete of the Week award.  Here's how the voting broke down: Which St. Charles County softball player has had the best start to the 2012 season? Taylor has been hitting just about everything this season for the Fort Zumwalt East Lions. Taylor leads the Lions in several offensive categories like batting average (.476), homers (three), RBIs (11) and steals (two). She has 10 hits on the year, six for extra bases—two doubles, a triple and three home runs. Fort Zumwalt East Strikes Quick, Takes Down Francis Howell Central

The Lions open the 2012 season with a big road win in the first-ever game against the Spartans.

In a span of just more than two minutes, the Fort Zumwalt East Lions took control. Ahead by six with just six minutes left to go in the first half, the Lions went for the three-part knockout of the host Francis Howell Central Spartans in the 2012 season opener. With the score standing at 12-6 in favor of East, the Lions went touchdown, forced fumble, touchdown in 2:02 to take over the game. The swift turn of events gave put the Lions in control—a position East wouldn’t relinquish en route to a season-opening 34-20 victory. “We felt like it was a good team effort all the way around," East head coach Scott Eacret said. New Football Districts on the Schedule for 2012

MSHSAA recently revealed a new-look football District format for the next two seasons.

District football is getting a new look around Missouri. The Missouri State High School Activities Association recently released District assignments for the 2012 and 2013 season. Under the old format, schools were placed in four or five-team Districts and the last three to four weeks of the regular season became the de facto playoffs. A team that 0-7 in the regular season could go 3-0 in Districts and make the State Tournament.  That system has been scrapped. Now each school is in an eight-team District that places a higher emphasis on every game counting.  From MSHSAA: The new format will create a nine-game regular season with schools scheduling all nine of these games. The 10th week will be the beginning of the District Championships. …
