How Much is a Portion?

The two basics of healthy eating are knowing which foods are the better choices and then knowing portion sizes. With the variety of portions served in restaurants, in your home and in packaged foods, it can be very confusing to know what is the right portion size. Let’s make the portion size a bit clearer. First, a portion is the reference amount for a food within each of the five food groups in the dietary guidelines or on MyPlate. Second, portions sizes will not vary, but the number of servings (portions) you should consume will depend on your body size and physical activity. The following examples describe one portion. Five Places to Pick Your Own Fruit

Take the kids and show them where fresh fruit comes from.

There's something special about making a pie--or jam--from fruit you've picked yourself. Here are five small family-owned places to check out this summer and fall for fresh fruit picking. Word of warning--you may need to get up early to pick, as many farms close the gates after a certain number of people come through in a day. 1. Lakeview Farms: This farm in St. Peters has both strawberries and raspberries in the summer and pumpkins in the fall. Strawberry picking in 2011 is expected to wrap up by Tuesday, so get out there while there are some left. The raspberry season is expected to run between June 11 and 24. Lakeview Farms has been our favorite place to pick berries since we moved across the street from the farm in Copperfield Subdivision in 1986. My youngest daughter began calling it "Strawberry Fields Forever" and with me the name has remained as SFF.
