Athlete of the Week: Sam Chambers Named GAC Player of the Year

Duchesne's Sam Chambers win the fan's choice for GAC baseball player of the year for 2012.

Sam Chambers is used to running away with things.  The Duchesne baseball star was among the top-10 players in the GAC North with his seven steals. This week, in our fan's choice poll for GAC baseball player of the year, Chambers ran away with the title. The Pioneer picked up 79 percent of the vote to win the fan-voted crown.  Here's how the voting broke down : Who is the top GAC Baseball player for the 2012 season? Chambers was part of a potent Duchesne offense. Chambers sparked the Pioneers by getting on base early and often. He finished the season with a .423—tied for third in the GAC North behind two of his teammates. He led the league in runs scored with 35—seven more than the runner up. He was second in the league with nine doubles, …

Help us name the fan's choice for GAC baseball player of the year.

The 2012 baseball season ended this weekend at the State championships. To celebrate the season, we're taking a look back. All across St. Charles County fans got to witness great performances from baseball players. Here's what we're looking for: Who is the top GAC Baseball player for the 2012 season? Here are the nominees:  Josh Abegg—Holt: Josh Abegg was easily the ace of the Holt pitching staff. The Holt hurler had quite a year for the Indians. He picked up six wins on the year, tied for best in GAC South. His overall record was 6-1, one of the top winning percentages in the conference. In 46 innings pitched, Abegg allowed a miniscule seven earned runs. His ERA was 1.07 for the year, good enough for third in the league. He picked up 53 …

Athlete of the Week: Howell Central's Travis Vaught Wins Top Honors

Francis Howell Central's Travis Vaught wins the "Patch" Athlete of the Week Award.

Travis Vaught had a big week on the baseball diamond for the Howell Central Spartans last week. He did even better in the Athlete of the Week voting. Vaught trounced the field in the St. Charles County Patch Athlete of the Week poll. Out of the nearly 400 votes cast, Vaught picked up a whopping 96 percent to easily win the award.  Here's how the voting went down. Who was the St. Charles County baseball player of the week beginning on April 23? Total votes: 391 -- Vaught did it all last week for the Spartans. Vaught opened the week on April 24 with a stat-filling performance. In Howell Central's 8-3 win, Vaught was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three runs batted in. Another week is in the books, which means it's time for another chance to find St. Charles County's Athlete of the Week. This week, we turn our attention to the baseball diamond. Here are the nominees for the St. Charles County baseball player of the week for the week of April 23: Travis Vaught—Francis Howell Central: The Spartans Travis Vaught did it all last week. Vaught opened the week on April 24 with a stat-filling performance. In Howell Central's 8-3 win, Vaught was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three runs batted in. To top it off, he added two stolen bases. The next day, against Vianney, Vaught walked once and scored two runs in the Spartans' win. Howell North's Braxton Martinez Picks Up Athlete of the Week Award

Francis Howell North's Braxton Martinez won the fan choice for Patch's Athlete of the Week.

Braxton Martinez has been punishing pitchers around St. Charles County this season.  The Francis Howell North product is a hitting star this season for the Knights and the fans have taken notice. In our Athlete of the Week poll, Martinez was the top vote getter. With 48 of the 74 votes (64 percent), Martinez won the top honors in our fan's choice for best baseball player so far this season.  Here's how the voting went down:  Total votes: 74 votes Martinez, who will be attending Saint Louis University in the fall, has been tearing things up so far this season for the Knights. He's hitting .543 (19-for-35) with seven doubles, one homer and 16 RBIs. He's also scored 18 runs this season for the Howell North.  *** Patch wants to thank everyone …

One of the sure-fire signs of spring, besides sneezing fits for those inflicted with seasonal allergies, is baseball. Diamonds all across St. Charles County has been busy in the early part of the high school baseball season. Even though the season is just two weeks old, plenty of action has taken place on the field. This week, we're asking you Patch readers to decide which baseball player around the County has had the biggest impact in the early part of the season.  The nominees are:  Ryan March—Fort Zumwalt East: The month of March was very good for Mr. March. Fort Zumwalt East's Ryan March excelled with the bat and on the mound for the Lions. While toeing the rubber, March compiled a 2-1 record with a sparkling 0.95 ERA—he's given up …
