Supreme Court votes 8-1 in favor of Westboro Baptist Church in lawsuit brought by Marine's father.
A recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling will not alter St. Charles County’s defense of its law restricting protests at funerals, said a St. Charles County official. In fact, the decision handed down Wednesday may bolster the county’s case, said Assistant County Counselor Robert Hoeynck. The Supreme Court ruled 8-1 in favor of Westboro Baptist Church, upholding a lower court decision that shields Westboro Baptist Church from liability for its protests. Albert Snyder, the father of Matthew Snyder, a Marine killed in Iraq, sued the church after members picketed his son’s funeral for intentionally inflicting emotional distress. O'Fallon City Council approved the towing bid 6-3 at the Feb. 10 meeting.
Mayor Bill Hennessy vetoed the O'Fallon City Council’s decision to award the city towing contract to Rodlin Enterprises, operated as Budget Towing. Each bill or resolution passed by the city council goes to the mayor, who may either sign or return it to the city clerk -- within ten days -- citing reasons for disapproval. In a statement to the city clerk dated Feb. 16, Hennessy said council members failed to provide specific reasons for selecting Budget Towing over the other four bids submitted. “Moreover, in accord with prior council direction, city staff has been in the process of refining the bidding documents and relevant specifications and review criteria in order to solicit new proposals for consideration,” Hennessy said in the …

Tower in Defiance area would ruin landscape, the area's biggest asset, council member says.
St. Charles County and St. Charles Tower took another step towards the courtroom Monday. The county provided its legal reasons for turning down the company’s proposal to erect a cell tower near Walnut Creek Trail in the Defiance area during the county council’s meeting Monday. The county council turned down the proposal for the tower during its January meeting. County Councilman Joe Brazil, R-District 1, of Defiance, said that the council has not approved any cell tower in the Defiance area since he has been on the council. Brazil said he has voted no on every such cell tower proposal. “It’s infringing on the beauty of the area,” Brazil said after the meeting. “That’s the area’s biggest asset.
