David Goewert, who is challenging the incumbent Bill Hennessy for the post, paid for much of his committee's spending out of his own pocketbook.
In his race to become O'Fallon's next mayor, challenger David Goewert's committee outspent incumbent Bill Hennessy's committee by about $1,400. That's according to campaign finance reports filed with St. Charles County Election Authority on March 25. Documents show that even as Goewert raised less money than his opponent, his committee outspent Hennessey's. Goewert's committee spent $6,412 against Hennessy's $4,958. Goewert, a 43-year-old O'Fallon police officer, is the primary contributor to his campaign. Of the $6,412 raised this election season, Goewert's own pocketbook accounted for about half. Compensation was last set for elected officials in 2001.
O'Fallon City Council voted 6-4 to approve an increase in compensation for the city's elected officials at the Thursday, March 14 meeting. Voting against the ordinance were Ward 1 Councilmen Bill Gardner and Rick Lucas, Ward 3 Councilman Rick Battelle and Ward 5 Councilman Michael Snowden. Compensation was last set for elected officials in 2001 at $19,500 per year for the mayor and $7,600 per year for council members. The newly passed ordinance increased compensation to $24,000 for the mayor and $12,000 for council members. The new salaries go into effect for the winners of the April 2013 election.
