Local skaters and bikers will have a new place to ride in O'Fallon next week. A skate park under construction in Westhoff Park at the entrance near T.R. Hughes Boulevard and Cool Springs Industrial Drive will open to the public next Saturday. The Westhoff Plaza park is made of concrete and measure around 10,600 square feet in size, with street and bowl skateboarding features. The City of O’Fallon’s grand opening for the park is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 17 from 10 a.m. to noon. The O'Fallon Parks and Recreation Department is hosting some family Cinco de Mayo fun this weekend with the RSC Fiesta 5K Run/Walk. Ty Joyce, recreation fitness specialist, said proceeds from the event held on Saturday, May 5 at the Renaud Spirit Center will benefit O'Fallon parks. "We have had our 5K annually for about the last five years, but this is the first year for the Cinco de mayo 5K!" Joyce said. This year, participants are also encouraged to enter a Cinco de Mayo costume contest. Now through May 31, parents, residents and coaches can help the City of O’Fallon earn a $2,500 grant to enhance the city’s youth sports program. Liberty Mutual sponsors The Liberty Mutual Responsible Sports Community Grant Program and distributes 20 grants annually. The grant money is used in communities to purchase equipment for youth sports programs. The Liberty Mutual grant program teaches and fosters a cooperative spirit between coaches, parents and players. For the second year in a row, Volunteer Services is hosting their Alternative Spring Break. Volunteer Services Coordinator Alexis Jaegers said nearly 20 volunteers are signed up to help plant Liriope to assist with erosion in Dames Park from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday March 16. Parks and Recreation launched their fundraising efforts and unveiled design plans for the all-inclusive playground at an event at the Renaud Center last Wednesday night.
