O'Fallon residents gathered on Tuesday morning for a ceremony to honor the people who perished and the brave first responders who risked their lives 11-years-ago in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11. The City of O'Fallon hosted “A Tribute to First Responders” at 8:30 a.m. in front of the First Responders 9-11 Memorial outside the O’Fallon Police Department at the O'Fallon Municipal Centre, 100 North Main St. The First Responders 9-11 Memorial was created from steel salvaged from the destruction of New York City’s World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Today America remembers the Sept. 11 attacks in New York and Washington D.C. Patch spoke with several people affected by the attacks. Jeffrey Springer from Olivette, was in the World Trade Center when it was hit. He worked as a senior manager for Morgan Stanley on the day of the attack; he now works as a manager for a Philadelphia-based investment firm. In the video he appears with his wife Ruth about the event. Kevin Boyer of Maryland Heights was also at the World Trade Center when it was attacked. O'Fallon volunteers of all ages are giving back to the community on Saturday in honor of "9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance." United Way of Greater St. Louis helped organize projects throughout the St. Louis community for the 11th anniversary of 9/11 in honor of those who lost their lives and those who showed great courage during the terrorist attacks.
