Area Players Named to All-State Football Team

Local players from Fort Zumwalt, St. Dominic and Francis Howell were named to the first team.

Francis Howell Vikings’ senior linebacker Calvin Munson has been named as the Class 6 Defensive Player of the Year by the Missouri Football Coaches Association. The All-State teams were released last week, and a total of four Vikings took first-team honors, while two more were named to the second team. Joining Munson on the first team were senior running back Donte Harrell, senior offensive lineman Jimmy Alloway, and senior defensive back Zac Perkins. Perkins was also named as the first team kicker. Perkins’ season included a school-record 50-yard field goal. Also on the second team were senior defensive lineman Donovan Walker and Jarrett Franklin, a senior defensive end who set a school record for most sacks in a single season with 21. …

Playoffs: District Football Playoffs Continue Wednesday Night

St. Dominic will face Helias in the second round of the District playoffs.

Ten weeks of the season have gone by, and now the field has been narrowed. Week 10 eliminated half the teams from State title contention. Now Round 2 of the District playoffs continue. Let's get to the matchups.   The second round of the Class 4, District 6 tournament features a game featuring the Crusaders against the Crusaders.  Helias, despite a 6-4 record, is the second seed and the home team against 9-1 St. Dominic. While St. Dominic plays against smaller schools in conference play, Helias, an independent, usually plays a tougher schedule.  St. Dominic has been potent offensively this year, scoring an average of 33.1 points per contest. Dillon Bowman—Fort Zumwalt South: Fort Zumwalt South's Dillon Bowman may not have had the big numbers Thursday night against Zumwalt North, but he came through when it mattered. Bowman picked a 25-yard touchdown run in overtime and then successfully made the two-point conversion to give the Bulldogs a big Week 10 playoff win over the rival Panthers. Matchups Set for District Football Playoffs

Week 10 kicks off the new-look Missouri football playoff format.

Week 10 of the high school football season in Missouri is no longer a battle to improve playoff standings. Instead, it's a chance to keep playing—or see a season end.  Wanting to have every regular season game count, the powers that be changed the playoff format this season. A complex point system was created to make sure every game played weighed into the playoff seeding. Matt Etherton—Fort Zumwalt East: The Lions are 5-1 and got win No. 5 in a big win against rival Zumwalt South. The quarterback-receiver combo of Shane Barrett and Matt Etherton had a big game. Etherton had just four catches, but he made them count en route to 105 yards receiving. Athlete of the Week: Zumwalt East's Barrett Wins Top Honors

Fort Zumwalt East quarterback Shane Barrett wins the fan's choice for top football player from Week 5.

Shane Barret's arm and leg led Zumwalt East to a big Week 5 win. Passing and running, Barret helped push the Lions past rival Zumwalt North. His performance not only helped the Lions win the game, it helped him winthe Patch St. Charles County Athlete of the Week award.  Here's how the voting broke down: Which St. Charles County football player had the best Week 5?   The Lions' sophomore signal caller led East to a 38-26 win against rival Zumwalt North. The win pushed the Lions to 4-1 on the season. Against North, Barrett was a difference maker. He carried the ball 27 times for 110 yards (4.1 yards a carry) and two touchdowns. Visitation Friday For Beloved Former St. Dominic Basketball Coach

Ed Crenshaw coached basketball at the school for 14 years.

Ed Crenshaw, former basketball star and St. Dominic High School coach, is remembered with a visitation today. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Crenshaw passed away on Tuesday at the age of 78. As O'Fallon Patch previously reported, Crenshaw was battling Alzheimer's and was under the care of hospice in recent years. St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports Crenshaw's visitation is Friday, Sept. 28 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at William C. Harris Funeral Directors, 9825 Halls Ferry Rd. The funeral is Saturday at All Saints Catholic Church, 6403 Clemens Avenue, in University City. Crenshaw coached basketball at St. Dominic High School for 14 years in the '60s and '70s. Brody Allen—Francis Howell Central: The Howell Central Spartans finally broke through and picked up a win in Week 5 and a large reason was the play of quarterback Brody Allen. In the Spartans 34-0 blanking of Howell North, Allen had his hands in two touchdowns—one with his arm and one with his legs. He was just 6-for-14 throwing the ball, but he did complete at 6-yard TD pass. He really showed off on the ground. With 16 carries, Allen racked up 123 yards (7.7 yards a carry). He lone touchdown came on a 26-yard …

Athlete of the Week: St. Dominic's Emily Weaver Crowned Winner

The St. Dominic soccer player topped the latest St. Charles County Athlete of the Week poll.

Emily Monroe is the latest St. Charles County Athlete of the Week.  Weaver was part of a potent St. Dominic attack that powered its way into the Final Four of the State tournament. Her offensive exploits didn't go unnoticed. Weaver eked out a one-vote victory to capture the St. Charles County Athlete of the Week crown.  Here's  how the voting went down : Who was the St. Charles County player of the week for the week beginning on May 21? Emily Monroe and the St. Dominic girls soccer team are on quite a run. The Crusaders are in the Final Four of the Class 2 State tournament after back-to-back wins last week. Both wins for St. Dominic came in impressive fashion—on May 22, the Crusaders won 6-0 and on May 26, the girls won 8-1. The offense …
