When Can I File My 2013 Tax Return?

Information on 2013 filing, complete with local accountant contacts.

Jan. 30 was the first day you can file your annual tax return. The Internal Revenue Service has revised its opening date for tax season—pushing it back eight days from previous years.  The tax filing deadline is Monday, April 15, 2013. The IRS will begin accepting tax returns beginning today, Jan. 30, 2013. Most taxpayers should be able to file today, though some revised forms may not be immediately available. You can blame the delay on the federal "fiscal cliff" crisis and the new tax bill Congress passed just after Dec. 31. You can find more information in this Forbes article. Electronic filing season was originally set to start on Jan. 22 this year. As a result of the delay, nobody will get a refund in January, an H&R Block official …

Would You Support Higher Taxes for Arch and Parks Improvements?

One item on your April 2013 ballot might be a plan to raise sales taxes across St. Louis to pay for improvements in area parks and at the Gateway Arch.

When the April 2013 election arrives, you might be asked to vote on a potential hike to sales taxes in the city of St. Louis and both St. Louis and St. Charles counties. Keep this in mind. The increase would be 3/16 of one cent, and would help pay for improvements in area parks and at the Gateway Arch, among other things, reports the St. Louis Beacon.  In a Dec. 13 article, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the money collected from the tax increase would be split in the following ways:  The Missouri General Assembly approved the tax over the summer, but it still requires regional support across St. Louis, the Post-Dispatch reported. If lawmakers in St. Louis and both counties approve the issue, then it is expected to appear before …

Tax Filing Deadline Extended to April 17

The IRS has extended the tax filing deadline to April 17.

Once again this year, the Internal Revenue Service is giving taxpayers extra time to file their tax returns, thanks to Emancipation Day. Last year, it was an extra weekend, this year, the IRS is extending the filing deadline to Tuesday, April 17. The IRS made the announcement Wednesday on its website. According to the press release, the deadline to file 2011 tax returns and pay any tax due is extended from April 15 to April 17 because April 15 falls on a Sunday, and Emancipation Day, a holiday observed in the District of Columbia, falls on Monday, April 16. The IRS stated in the release that federal law requires District of Columbia holidays to impact tax deadlines the same as federal holidays do so taxpayers get the two-day extension. The…

Property Taxes Amount to Peanuts in St. Charles County, Councilman Says

Council likely to consider tax increase for 2012 budget to compensate for flat sales taxes; some council members are don't like idea of a hike.

St. Charles County Councilman John White took a look at how much taxpayers pay in property taxes to St. Charles County. It was peanuts. During the last St. Charles County Council meeting, White showed his tax bill, which totaled $3,000. Most of that money went to school, fire protection and other taxing districts. But St. Charles County received 72 cents from his property tax, just enough to buy a bag of peanuts from grocery store. In fact, White pulled out a bag of peanuts to demonstrate that fact at the last St. Charles County Council meeting Sept. 26. The average St. Charles County taxpayer will pay 69 cents to county government at a rate of 16 cents per $100 assessed valuation on their 2011 property taxes, he said. White said the …

The fact that other jurisdictions impose taxes is really not the concern of the county. That the feds tax at one rate, the state at another, the school district at another, the fir district at another, is irrelevant to the county. The county has work to do and services to provide, and it needs an income stream to allow it to function. Whether or not you pay 85 cents to the library on every $100.…   more ›

Taxpayers Get an Extra Weekend to Prepare Returns with Extended Filing Deadline

With fewer people filing paper returns, local post offices will maintain regular business hours on April 18.

The familiar April 15 deadline for filing federal and state tax returns is three days later this year thanks to a little-known holiday celebrated in the District of Columbia called Emancipation Day. It marks the day President Abraham Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation Act in 1862, which freed about 3,100 slaves in the district. Normally, the holiday is recognized on April 16, but when it falls on a Saturday, like this year, it is observed the preceding Friday. Under the tax law, District of Columbia holidays are considered federal holidays, which prompted the IRS to move the deadline to April 18. Bruce Thompson, a franchise owner of Liberty Tax Service offices in O'Fallon, St. Peters, St. Charles and several north St. Louis county…
