O'Fallon-Native Helping Mizzou Wrestling Squad to Fantastic Season

Trevor Wiest, a graduate of Fort Zumwalt West High School, is 28-11 this season and has helped fueld the Tigers to a No. 6 NCNAA ranking heading into the final stretch of the season.

The University of Missouri wrestling team is among the nation's best in the 2012-13 season. And O'Fallon-native Trevor Wiest is a big part of that success.  Wiest, a graduate of Fort Zumwalt West, is 28-11 this season and has helped fueld the Tigers to a No. 6 NCNAA ranking heading into the final stretch of the season.  In his most recent match against Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Wiest won via technical fall. While at Zumwalt West, Wiest twice placed third at state during his four-year high school career. He lost only nine matches in his high school career, including an undefeated senior season, and finished his high school years with 191 wins.  For more on Wiest, check out the Mizzou Tigers' athletic website.

Barat Junior Competes on One-Man Wrestling Team

Justin Habiger has compiled an 11-13 record so far this season, as the only wrestler on Barat Academy's team.

Editor's note: This story has been updated. Coach Jim Hill's name was previously incorrect.  Like thousands and thousands of high school athletes across the country, Barat Academy junior Justin Habiger spends the winter competing on a wrestling team. But what distinguishes Habiger’s team from just about any other is its size – one wrestler. “We wrestle each other,” Barat Academy coach Jim Hill said about practices. “We do a lot of situational wrestling, where we’ll start out in a particular position and we’ll drill on the correct thing to do in that situation." Both Hill and Habiger admit that practices are tough with few “live practices with other wrestlers.” The junior said it’s very important that he learns as much as possible in each …

Jaguars Defeated 36-23 in Match Against Spartans

The Fort Zumwalt West wrestling team is currently ranked ninth in the state.

For Francis Howell Central senior wrestler Terrel Wilbourn, it's been nearly a month since he's last competed in a match. The two-time defending state champion had been nursing a knee injury that's kept him out of the lineup since Dec. 15, 2010. On Wednesday, he made his return to competition with a tough opponent in Fort Zumwalt West's Kyle Hussey, who recently won the GAC South championship at 145 pounds. “I've been anxious to get back going,” Wilbourn said. “I knew he (Hussey) was good and figured this would be a tough first match back.” Wilbourn, who is ranked No. 1 in the state despite his time missed due to injury, displayed a commanding performance over Hussey en route to a 6-1 victory. Wilbourn showcased a few explosive takedowns …
