O'Fallon to Consider Relaxing BB/Pellet Gun Ordinance

The amendment would allow use on residential property under some conditions, but BB and pellet guns would still be banned on public property

An ordinance being introduced at Thursday night's meeting of the O'Fallon City Council could relax regulations about the discharge of air guns on residential property—as long as parents supervise children and neighboring properties are protected.

Items being affected by the ordinance are:

  • BB guns
  • Paintball guns
  • Air guns
  • Any device that shoots a hard substance by means of a sling, bow, crossbow, rubber band or any other means
O'Fallon Councilman Jim Pepper is sponsoring the bill that would amend the original ordinance, which bans the discharge of such weapons in the city limits.

Discharge would still be prohibited on public property.

Conditions for the use of the items on residential property would be that children under the age of 17 would be supervised by an adult, and that they will be used "in a manner where neighboring properties are protected from negligent damage and endangerment of other persons."

The amendment states that intentional or negligent use of the items that results in injury or damage would be an ordinance violation.
